Quem por acaso esteja em Londres na quarta-feira, 17 de fevereiro de 2010,
está convidado para a apresentação do filme de Denise Garcia, *Sou feia mas
tô na moda*, no Centro de Pesquisa em Estudos Culturais da University of
East London. Denise, Steve Goodman e eu debateremos o filme com a platéia
após a apresentação. Steve é o autor de *Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and
the Ecology of Fear*, recém publicado por MIT Press. O evento é organizado
por Tim Lawrence, autor do premiado e multitraduzido *Love Saves the Day: A
History of American Dance Music Culture**, 1970-1979* (Durham e Londres:
Duke University Press, 2003) e de uma biografia de Arthur Russel que será
lançada em breve. Segue o convite.

The Centre for Cultural Studies Research, a research centre located in the
School of Humanities and Social Sciences at UEL, is delighted to present the
first UK screening of director Denise Garcia's 2005 documentary on women in
funk carioca, *I'm Ugly but Trendy*. Funk carioca, sometimes referred to as
baile funk, is a form of Brazilian electronic dance music that emerged as an
outgrowth of Miami bass, and has been played in ghetto raves in the favelas
of Rio since 1989.

The film will be introduced by Garcia, after which Carlos Palombini and
Steve Goodman (UEL) will respond. Garcia will join Palombini and Goodman in
a general Q&A discussion. Contributors will consider: In what Brazilian
traditions is funk carioca rooted? What Brazilian traditions does the
culture interrogate? To what extent is Garcia's film an ethnographic
document? How are the power relations of gender and class played out in the
culture and the film?

The event will take place in Matrix East, EB.1.37, at the Univeristy of East
London's Docklands Campus, 4-6pm on Wednesday 17 February. If you would like
to attend the screening, please reserve a seat by replying to Tim Lawrence
at tlawrence1 em mac.com ccsr em uel.ac.uk.
