THE ROYAL MUSICAL ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES NEW LOOK CONFERENCE

The Royal Musical Association, in association with the Institute of Musical
Research, has just announced the programme for its 49th Annual Conference.

In the 21st century academic conferences have gone global; they have become
business ventures in their own right. They offer a time and a place where
people
are drawn together to share ideas, to renew acquaintances and to make new
contacts, and to clinch publishing deals.
Two years ago the Royal Musical Association invited its members to put
forward
views and suggestions on the format and content of its Annual Conference.
The
majority of members were of the opinion that the conference was a valuable
event, should be held at a fixed point in the year, that the presence of
authoritative guest speakers was a major draw, and that well-chaired panel
discussions were an excellent way of exchanging research ideas. The
programme
for the forthcoming conference takes these views into account.

Highlights for the 2013 Royal Musical Association Annual Conference include:

· More than 75 speakers from 10 different countries
· 13 panel discussions by internationally renowned academics
· Research papers on music as manuscript, as recording, and as
performance
· Themed sessions on music's relationship to other art-forms and to the
sciences
· Poster session and performance workshop showcasing current and
recently completed major Arts and Humanities Research Council projects
· The Edward J. Dent Medal Presentation and Lecture: Michel Duchesneau
from the University of Montréal will speak on 'Musicology and Commitment
from

· The Peter Le Huray Lecture: Gianmario Borio from the Università di
Pavia will deliver a paper on 'Composers Analysing Other Composers: A

Reception History in 20th-Century Music'
