INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE“IGNACIO JERUSALEM 250: GALANT MUSICS IN ITALY, THE IBERIAN PENINSULA, AND THE NEW WORLD” Wednesday, December 3 – Friday, December 5. 2019Universidad Internacional de Andalucía, Baeza (Spain) Traditionally seen as a transitional style between the Baroque and Classical periods, the galant style is recognized today, thanks to the work of D. Heartz and R. Gjerdingen, among others, as the principal musical style cultivated in Europe and the Americas between 1720 and 1780. This transnational style of composition and performance, an example of cultural modernity with marked roots in the theater, developed in the conservatories of the Kingdom of Naples and from there it was disseminated to and adapted by different geographies and institutions, initially by Italian musicians, who transformed the musical aesthetics heard in churches, theaters, and aristocratic chambers in a profound way. Ignacio Jerusalem (Lecce, 1707 – Mexico City, 1769), a progressive Neapolitan musician active in Italy, Spain, and Mexico, actively contributed to the diaspora of the galant style, and through his three musical roles, he paradigmatically embodies the reception of the new style in the Iberian world: composer for the theater and the church, violinist, and teacher. Leveraging the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Jerusalem’s death, and considering him a useful model for understanding the distinct issues associated with the reception of the galant style, this conference aims to both communicate current knowledge and inspire new theories and lines of investigation regarding aspects of stylistic development on the Iberian Peninsula and Spanish and Portuguese America during the “long” eighteenth century. In order to cover these themes, some of the most recognized specialists in galant music of Europe and the Americas will be present. In addition to these invited keynote presentations (it is confirmed violinist and conductor Fabio Biondi as speaker), free papers related to the thematic scope of the conference will also be accepted by the Scientific Committee. Paper proposals related to the following topic areas, among others, will be considered: - Ignacio Jerusalem: new findings regarding his life, work, and reception- Methodologies, historiographic problems, and sources for the study of the reception of galant music in the Iberian world- Migration of Italian musicians to the Iberian Peninsula and Spanish and Portuguese America- Circulation, reception, persistence, and transformation of imported galant repertories- Galant styles: analytic methods and formal characterization of the different generations of galant composers- Processes of circulation of galant music among the theater, church, and salon- Poetic texts and galant music: processes of literary and musical adaptation- Galant style, devotional practices, and cultural aspects- Coexistence of the galant style with traditional styles- Pedagogical methods associated with the galant style- The galant style as a performance practice Proposals for individual 20-minute papers in Spanish, English, Italian or Portuguese are welcome.
