<DIV>With much sorrow, I must inform the List of the death of Gerard Béhague</DIV>
<DIV>after a year-long illness.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Founder and editor of the _Latin American Music Review_, Gerard was</DIV>
<DIV>arguably the most distinguished scholar of Brazilian and Latin American</DIV>
<DIV>music in the United States, and certainly shaped the ethnomusicology</DIV>
<DIV>program at the University of Texas at Austin into its current first-rank</DIV>
<DIV>status. He was an exceptional mentor to his advisees, and an invaluable</DIV>
<DIV>resource to many other scholars. A former president of the SEM, he was</DIV>
<DIV>also a member of the AMS for many years.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The musicology and ethnomusicology program at the University of Texas</DIV>
<DIV>mourns the loss of a leading light, whose absence will be strongly felt,</DIV>
<DIV>and whose energy, intellect, and leadership will be irreplaceable.</DIV>

<DIV>No public funeral is scheduled, but a memorial celebration at the</DIV>
<DIV>University of Texas is planned later this year.</DIV>
