<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Courier New" size=2><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'">En 1917-1918, le compositeur français Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) séjourne au Brésil en tant que secrétaire personnel de Paul Claudel, nommé ambassadeur dans ce pays. De retour à Paris, Milhaud signe des articles pour Littérature et La Revue musicale dans lesquels il célèbre la musique populaire brésilienne découverte lors de son voyage, propos qu'il reprendra plus tard dans ses mémoires (Ma vie heureuse, 1974). Fasciné par ce répertoire, il s'en inspirera pour composer Le Bouf sur le toit (1919), ouvre qui cite plus d'une vingtaine de mélodies populaires brésiliennes, dont certaines apparaissent aussi dans les ballets L'<SPAN class=SpellE>Homme</SPAN> et son désir et Salade (1924), de même que dans Scaramouche (1937) et les Danses de <SPAN class=SpellE>Jacaremirim</SPAN> (1945), pour piano.</SPAN></FONT></P>

<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Courier New" size=2><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'">Cette conférence explore la présence de la musique brésilienne dans les écrits et les ouvres de Milhaud à la lumière du contexte culturel français de l'entre-deux-guerres. Quel est le discours de Milhaud sur la musique brésilienne? Comment les emprunts brésiliens sont-ils traités dans les ouvres du compositeur? En quoi ces ouvres offrent-elles une relecture de la musique brésilienne? Ce sont là quelques interrogations auxquelles nous proposerons des pistes de réponses. D'une part, le répertoire populaire brésilien possède une richesse rythmique inédite qui fascine Milhaud et rejoint son intérêt pour ce paramètre. D'autre part, les citations témoignent d'une forme éloquente d'appropriation et d'actualisation d'un matériau populaire qui correspond à une conception particulière du
folklore chez le compositeur. Nous verrons par ailleurs que ces citations s'inscrivent dans une stratégie d'emprunt plus vaste, qui puise à plusieurs répertoires et émaille l'ensemble de la production de Milhaud. Dans le cas de la musique populaire brésilienne, elle illustre l'attachement de Milhaud à la culture latine dont le compositeur s'est toujours réclamé.</SPAN></FONT></P>

<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Courier New" size=2><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'">Diplômée du Conservatoire de musique de Rimouski en piano, Marie-Noëlle Lavoie a complété une maîtrise en musicologie à l'Université de Montréal sur les rapports entre le groupe surréaliste de Bruxelles et la musique. Elle poursuit actuellement un doctorat dans cette institution sur les emprunts dans l'ouvre de Darius Milhaud. En collaboration avec l'Observatoire international de la création musicale (OICM) et le Répertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM) elle travaille à l'indexation et à l'histoire du périodique français La Revue musicale (1920-40). Elle est membre depuis cinq ans du comité de rédaction des Cahiers de la Société québécoise de recherche en musique.</SPAN></FONT></P>
