He also studied privately with Carl Schachter in New York. Since 1979 he has been active as concert pianist and since 2003 he is Associate professor for Music Theory at the University of Rome-Tor Vergata. In 2001 he was visiting professor at the Queens College and at the Graduate center of the City University of New York. He is a member of the editorial boards of GATM (Gruppo analisi e teoria musicale) and of the journal "Analitica". He is also in the board of consultants for the project Monuments of Partimenti of the Northwestern University (Robert O. Gjerdingen, Project Director). </SPAN></FONT></P>

He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Rameau and Musical Thought in the Enlightenment; most recently he has edited the Cambridge History of Western Music Theory (Cambridge, 2002). Professor Christensen served as President of the Society for Music Theory (1999-2001), and is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. Ph.D., Yale, 1985; at Chicago since 1999.</SPAN></FONT></P>

After obtaining his doctorate in 1987, he became a professor at the University of Aberdeen and a committee member of the Magdalene College Cambridge. In 1989 he became a assistant-professor in music at the University of Berkeley. In 2001 he became a Gardiner Chair of Music of the University of Glasgow, where he is also the chief member of the music department. John Butt is especially active as a performer and conductor of several choirs in Cambridge and Berkeley. He appeared several times as an organist, harpsichordist and conductor in Great-Britain, the United States of America and Europe.</SPAN></FONT></P>
