<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">1. <U>Motivations</U></SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"> : </SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">The traditional musics of East Asia have long been established in practice and study. However, due to the limitations of language, requiring local scholars to publish in English as an entry point to Western academic dissemination, there has been considerably less direct exchange between East Asian researchers. </SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">With this standpoint in mind, the National Centre for Traditional Arts in I-lan has decided to organise the 2006 Asian Pacific Traditional Arts Festival and planned a co-curricular activity with Nanhua University, Taiwan, in the form of a conference on East Asian Music and Modernity. This event hopes to offer opportunities for direct dialogue between Asian and other countries on the issue of modernity in East Asian music, in addition general cultural exchange. The National Centre for Traditional Arts is an important institution for the conservation of traditional music in the Chinese community. Nanhua University has long been promoting ethnomusicological research since its inception, and hopes – through the presentation of academic research – to complement the realm of
live performance at the Asian Pacific Traditional Arts Festival. </SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">This is an event that will allow for the congregation of Asian music researchers in Asia, and prepare the ground for the formation of an East Asian Music Study Group under the auspices of the International Council for Traditional Music, as part of a larger plan to strengthen academic research in East Asian ethnomusicology. At the 38th Conference of the International Council for Traditional Music, held in Sheffield, August 2005, various scholars – including TSUKADA Kenichi (Japan), SHEEN Dae-Cheol (Korea), XIAO Mei (China), Nora YEH (United States) and TSAI Tsanhuang (Taiwan) – had come to the view that many scholars in Asia, otherwise worthy researchers in their native fields, were being hindered by language difficulties and refraining from attending international
conferences. This lack of participation on the international stage has inadvertently led to an overlooking of Asian ethnomusicological research. </SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">The formation of the Asian Music Study Group will hopefully address this issue, and provide for greater exchange on both the regional Asian ethnomusicology stage, as well as other international platforms.</SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">2. <U>Conference Theme and Related Issues</U></SPAN></FONT><U><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"> </SPAN></FONT></U><U><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">Today</SPAN></FONT></U><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"> : the musics of East Asia have long been exposed to cultural exchange and share similar characteristics: Some of these common representations are found in the musical sound itself (e.g. pitch-systems, melodies, aesthetics etc); other representations are found in the larger socio-cultural dimensions to this sound (e.g. organology, biology, the passing of traditions etc). Since the 18th and 19th centuries, Western colonial
powers have also made their presence felt in Asia. These developments have no doubt contributed to conflicts resulting in philosophical and political tussles between the desire to “modernise” and the need to “preserve” traditional musical forms. Following a discussion held by conference organisers, we are pleased to invite academics to propose papers on the following (but not exclusive) research themes : Music and Cultural Policy</SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"> </SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">Musical Culture, Transmission and Education Music and Globalisation Music and Technology Music and Minority Music and Migration New Perspectives</SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">3. <U>Submission of Abstracts and Selection of Papers</U></SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"> : </SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">We hereby invite scholars from within and outside Taiwan, as well as musicians and students, to submit abstracts of no more than 350 words, in English, to the programme committee. We are especially encouraging postgraduate students to submit their abstracts. Final selections will be made and announced in mid June 2006, by a panel of academics listed below. Scholars whose abstracts have been accepted will only need prepare his or her own travel cost to Taiwan. Conference fees, inland travel expenditure and accommodation will be

This has been decided in the name of creating opportunities for scholars from different parts of the world to interact with each other, and also to stimulate regional exchange with a view to increasing the abilities of Asian scholars to present on international platforms. </SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Verdana size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">Each speaker will be given 30 minutes (including 20 minutes of paper presentation time and 10 minutes of questions). He or she is required to present new research that is yet unpublished. In order to smoothen the delivery of the translation process and facilitate international exchange, organisers strongly encourage scholars to prepare, in advance, full-text copies of their papers, in English (and also if possible a Chinese-English glossary of technical terms) for reproduction and circulation during the conference. </SPAN></FONT><FONT face=Verdana><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"></SPAN></FONT></P>
