<P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-JUSTIFY: inter-ideograph; MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman">Les évolutions récentes du jazz invitent les musicologues à approfondir deux phénomènes essentiels : l’héritage éclaté du <I>free jazz</I>, ultime courant clairement identifiable dans la succession inexorable des écoles et des styles depuis les années 1920 ; la résurgence incontournable et multiforme du passé du jazz (rééditions, hommages, <I>tributes</I>, expériences postmodernistes, …) comme une condition <I>sine qua non</I> de son présent. La place occupée par John Coltrane dans l’histoire du jazz peut être considérée de ces deux points de vue. Si des musiciens majeurs comme Sonny Rollins ou Ornette Coleman demeurent aujourd’hui en activité, Coltrane est couramment identifié comme le dernier des « maîtres
historiques » du jazz, l’ultime dépositaire de sa modernité. Tributaire d’une tradition remontant au Swing puis au Bebop (à travers l’influence de Johnny Hodges puis celle de Charlie Parker), Coltrane n’en est pas moins au cœur du <I>free jazz</I> qu’il a en grande partie inspiré et dont il s’est lui-même nourri en ses dernières années. Ce double positionnement, qui n’exclut pas d’autres approches, permet de voir dans la personnalité, l’œuvre et le rayonnement de John Coltrane, une série de clefs essentielles pour pénétrer les problématiques du jazz contemporain. La parution prochaine, en langue française, de la monographie de Lewis Porter (<I>John Coltrane, His Life and Music</I>, University of Michigan Press, 1998) coïncidera avec le quarantième anniversaire de la disparition du musicien. Il est prévu le regroupement des communications proposées selon cinq axes dont la formulation est susceptible d’évoluer selon les contributions retenues. </FONT></SPAN></P>

John Coltrane’s place in the history of jazz can be considered from these two points of view. </FONT></SPAN></P>
