The last decade has seen an unprecedented burgeoning of research on
musical
performance in the fields of musicology and music psychology. There is
now an
extensive and continually expanding body of theoretical knowledge about
the
practice strategies of performers, the motor skills involved in playing
an
instrument, the psychological and social factors that influence the
ways in
which performers work, and the acoustical properties of so-called
expressive
performance.<span style=""> </span>Furthermore, within
musicology a sophisticated and increasingly mainstream discourse exists
with
regard to the relationship between performance and analysis, and issues
of
historical performance.<br>
<br>
This accumulating research has led to the establishment of performance
studies
as a musicological discipline in its own right. The aim of this
conference is
to address issues of performance in relation to a particular period in
music
history and its legacy, namely the Romantic period. Its main focus will
be on
the performance of Romantic repertoire, and on the influences that
musical
Romanticism in all its dimensions has had on musical performance.<br>
<br>
Proposals for individual papers or panels are invited on any aspect of
performing Romantic music, and the relationship between Romanticism and
music
performance.<br>
<br>
Papers and panels might focus on such issues as:<br>
<br>
. analysis in relation to the performance of music composed during the
long
nineteenth century<br>
. composer-performers early recordings of Romantic music . national
traditions
and institutional frameworks . pedagogy<br>
. performance criticism . performance editions<br>
. performer-editors . performing Romantic music in the 21st century<br>
. Romantic conceptions of the performer's role<br>
. Romantic repertoire<br>
. Romanticizing early music in performance<br>
. rubato, expression marks, phrasing and articulation<br>
. schools of playing<br>
. theories of interpretation and expressivity in performance<br>
. teachers and their pupils<br>
. virtuosity and work character<br>

Proposals on other relevant topics are also welcome.<br>

Papers and discussions will take place in English.<br>

INDIVIDUAL PAPER LENGTH: 20 minutes, followed by 10-minute discussion<br>

PANEL LENGTH: 1 hour, with no more than four papers (paper lengths to

Music, Conflict and the Politics of Identity<br>

Judith Butler recently wrote that "[t]o be injured means that one has
the
chance to reflect upon injury, to find out the mechanisms of its
distribution,
to find out who else suffers from permeable borders, unexpected
violence,
dispossession, and fear, and in what ways" (2004).<br>
<br>
We invite submissions for a volume of essays that examines the role of
music in
geopolitical conflict, both historical and contemporary, including
wars,
revolutions, protests, genocides, and the post 9/11 "war on terror."
We are interested in how music may direct and contribute to conflict
and how
individuals or groups utilize it when coping with, responding to,
and/or
resolving geopolitical conflict and the injury suffered therefrom.<br>
<br>
We seek essays that engage with issues related to identity, including
individual, group, national, or transnational identity, as well as
topics that
explore musical nostalgia, cultural memory, fear, precarity and trauma.<span
style=""> </span>All perspectives and methodologies are
welcome; we hope to include essays that examine music and conflict
vis-a-vis
live performance, institutions (war museums, war memorials etc.), film,
television, radio, and the Internet. We wish to include authors and
topics from
a diverse range of ethnic, cultural and national viewpoints.<br>

Narrativity in music has been regarded by 20th century modernity
unfavorably,
as an outdated mode of expression. Yet with the rise of visual media in
the
concert environment the relation between music and non-musical
references is on
the rise. In the programme /New Narratives/ the Ensemble MAE will
present works
that deal with the idea of new narratives, with both music and visual
projections.<br>
<br>
*Yannis Kyriakides* will present a new large scale work, 'Dreams of the
Blind'
(2007). This piece is about the limits of what language can express of
dream
sensations and how music can both cloud and clarify it.<br>
<br>
*Arnoud Noordegraaf*, a composer and film maker who doesn't shy away
from using
narrative in his work wrote specifically for this programme the
intruiging work
'Interim' (2007), that explores the concept of gravity in visual and
sound
dimensions.<br>
<br>
The conceptual composer, photographer and film maker *LUIZ HENRIQUE
YUDO*
presents the ensemble a video score of two parts, 'Saint Omer' en 'El
Camino'
(2007). Using images of the 13th century maze at Notre-Dame in
Saint-Omer and
the famous pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the musicians find
their way
through the composition.<br>
<br>
'The Secrets of Mexuality' (2003) is a rapid montage exploring
sexuality in the
specific realms of Mexican wrestling and kitsch paintings, a virtuousic
work bu
composer *JUAN FELIPE WALLER *and visual artist *Martha Colburn.*<br>
<br>
Composer *David Dramm *and film maker *David Lammers*, who also
collaborated on
the feature film /Langer Licht, /made 'Helen Barbara' in 2002, a
charged
portrait of a girl that explores herself and the spectator without
restraint
and sings a song that, accompanied by the ensemble, becomes louder and
wilder.<br>
<br>
On the premiere of New Narratives in Paradiso, Ensemble MAE presents an
event
in which also the audiovisual work of Norwegian video artist *HC Gilje*
and
sound artist *Justin Bennett* is presented.<br>

It is possible to enroll as an observer.<br>

THEORETICAL COURSE<br>
<br>
from Monday, August 20th to Friday,September 7th :<br>
<br>
- 12 group lessons (3 hours per lesson) on alternate days by the 3
teachers, 6
per week during 2 weeks).<br>
<br>
- 6 individual lessons (one hour): twice a week for each participant,
during 3
weeks.<br>
<br>
There will be no theoretical lessons during weekend.<br>
<br>
<br>
COMPOSITION WORKSHOP<br>
<br>
>From Sunday, September 2nd to Saturday,September 8th : Participants
will be
expected to prepare a short piece (maximum length: 10 minutes - see
suggested
musical formation) and send half of the score to the Fondation
Royaumont before
July 15th with a program note. The parts should be ready by the
beginning of
the second week of the course.<br>
<br>
Work that fail to comply with these conditions will not be eligible for
performance either as part of the composition workshop or in concert.
The works
will be created on September 8th, as part of the Voix Nouvelles concert
series.
Directors of festivals,orchestras and composition courses are invited
at the
concerts.<br>
<br>
Participants will have two hours sessions to rehearse with the
musicians.<br>
<br>
Residences and exchange programs<br>
<br>
Within the framework of cooperation agreements, and with the support of
Fondation de France, Voix Nouvelles has settled a plan wich allows us
to help
the developpement of the carreer of the students who follow the
composition
course.<br>
<br>
Voix Nouvelles has set up exchange programmes for composers and singers
with Quebec
(Domaine Forget - Nouvel Ensemble Moderne), Japan (Takefu International
Music
Festival), the Netherlands (International Gaudeamus Muziekweek), and in
France
with Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Musiques Inventives d'Annecy
studio, the
Centre International de la Recherche Musicale and the Nice festival
MANCA, the
Studio National des Arts du Fresnoy and the Editions Musicales
Europeennes
(score edition).<br>
<br>
At Royaumont, joint workshops are organised with Voix Nouvelles and the
Center
for choregraphic Research and Composition headed by Susan Buirge.<br>
<br>
As a result of these cooperation agreements, we can offer students who
have
attended the Voix Nouvelles 2007 composition course the possibility of
continuing their training at other composition courses, and the
possibility of
residencies, commissions and publication of their own scores.<br>
<br>
One composer will attend the composition course at Domaine
Forget/Nouvel
Ensemble Moderne in Quebec in August 2008.<br>
<br>
One composer will attend the composition course at Takefu in Japan in
August
2008.<br>
<br>
One composers could enter the international Gaudeamus competition in
September
2008 in the Netherlands.<br>
<br>
One composer will be commissioned to write a piece for 6 percussions
while in
residence with Les Percussions de Strasbourg in 2008-2009.<br>
<br>
One composers will be commissionned for an electroacoustic installation
while
in residence in Musiques Inventives d'Annecy.<br>
<br>
The piece will be created in the Abbaye of Royaumont cloister in
September 2008
and also presented in MIA Annecy festival in November 2008.<br>
<br>
One composer will be edited by Editions Musicales Europeennes for his
next
pieces.<br>
<br>
Two composers will be invited to take part in the Choreographic
Composition
Workshop at Royaumont in August 2008.<br>
<br>
Moreover, the "Grand Atelier" will invite three former students of
the composition course during the 2008-2009 season.<br>

politics on the lives of musicians, music as a form of political
discourse, and

addition, we seek articles that examine pedagogical issues and
strategies pertaining to the study of Music and Politics in the
undergraduate
classroom.<span style=""> </span>We also welcome suggestions
and/or submissions of articles on Music and Politics that have already
been
published in another language and that would benefit from dissemination
in
English translation. <br>

Submissions are encouraged from both established scholars and graduate
students.<span style=""> </span>Because Music and Politics is

Antunes na Franca em 2008<br>
<br>
O maestro Jorge Antunes recebeu encomenda da Orquestra de Flautas da
Franca,
para compor uma nova obra: um concerto para saxofone e orquestra de
flautas.<br>
<br>
A OFF, Orchestre de Flutes Francais, e dirigida pelo flautista
Pierre-Yves
Artaud e e formada de 24 flautistas, incluindo flautas em do, flautins,
flautas
em sol, flautas baixo e uma flauta octabasse. Este raro instrumento, a
flauta
octobasse, nao existe no Brasil. Ela tem a mesma extensao do
clarinete-baixo.<br>
<br>
A nova obra de Antunes sera estreada em fevereiro de 2008, na Salle
Alfred
Cortot, tendo como solista o famoso saxofonista frances Claude Delangle.<br>
<br>
Jorge Antunes sera o regente do concerto.<br>
