would like to invite submissions for a forthcoming collection of

analytical studies of music by women composers, devoted to repertoire

from 1800 to the present.  Although a second volume addressing music

composed before 1800 is projected, the present call for abstracts is

for the more recent time period only.  The editors seek articles in

English that use a variety of analytical methodologies to explore and

elucidate music by female composers from diverse cultural backgrounds

and musical styles.  While we welcome studies from a wide variety of

epistemological perspectives, a strong component of technical music

analysis is required.</span></font></span></div> <div><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"></span></font></div> <div><span><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">In

recent decades, musicologists such as Marcia Citron, Karin Pendle,

Sophie Fuller, and Jill Halstead have drawn attention to the wealth of

music produced by women composers, while illuminating the challenges

faced by these creators in seeing their compositions performed and

discussed in the wider musical world.   Despite this groundbreaking

work in musicology, within the discipline of music theory few scholars

have yet devoted serious analytical attention to the work of these

composers.   Although there have been important contributions in recent

books by Joseph N. Straus, Ellie Hisama and Harald Krebs, music by

female composers is still almost completely absent from the major

peer-reviewed music theory journals and from music theory conference

programs. </span></font><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"></span></font></span></div> <div><span><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"> </span></font></span><span><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">The

intended purpose of this publication is to create a critical mass of

analytic discourse about the works of these underrepresented composers,

in order to facilitate the entry of music by women into the mainstream

of professional music-theoretical and analytical dialogue.</span></font></span><span><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"> </span></font><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"></span></font></span></div>

is envisaged that the volume, intended for an academic audience, will

comprise some twelve chapters, with essays being of between 7,000 and

10,000 words (including footnotes).  The editors welcome contributions

from both established and emerging scholars.  Among the confirmed

contributors so far are Harald Krebs, Judith Lochhead and Joseph N.

Parsons is currently Assistant Professor of music theory at Queen's

University, Kingston (Canada).   Her 2003 dissertation was the first

analytical study of British composer Elisabeth Lutyens's 1967 opera, </span></font></span><span><font face="Helvetica-Oblique" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"><i>The Numbered</i></span></font></span><span><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">.  She has published analytical articles on the opera and on Lutyens's Wittgenstein Motet in </span></font></span><span><font face="Helvetica-Oblique" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"><i>Theory & Practice</i></span></font></span><span><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"> and the </span></font></span><span><font face="Helvetica-Oblique" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"><i>Canadian University Music Review</i></span></font></span><span><font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">,

Ravenscroft is Associate Professor of music theory at Queen's

University and Associate Dean of Studies in the Faculty of Arts and

Science. Her research is focused on the music of contemporary American

composers, and she has published in such journals as <font face="Helvetica-Oblique" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">Perspectives of New Music<font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">, <font face="Helvetica-Oblique" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">Music Analysis<font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"> and the<font face="Helvetica-Oblique" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"> Journal of the American Musicological Society<font face="Helvetica" size="4"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">.

She is currently working on the vocal music of Libby Larsen, and will

be contributing a chapter to a forthcoming book on the music of Elliott
