<p>Pál Schmitt defended his doctoral (dr.univ) dissertation <i>summa cum laude</i> at the <i>Testnevelési Egyetem</i> (University of Physical Education) in 1995. <i>Testnevelési Egyetem</i> fused into Budapest's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University" title="Semmelweis University">Semmelweis University</a> to become one of its Faculties in 2000.<sup id="cite_ref-28" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-28"><span></span></a></sup> On 11 January 2012, the website of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heti_Vil%C3%A1ggazdas%C3%A1g" title="Heti Világgazdaság">HVG</a> accused Schmitt of plagiarising the work of a Bulgarian sport expert for his doctoral dissertation. Nikolay Georgiev's <i>Analyse du programme olympique (des Jeux d’Olympiade)</i> was finished in 1987. Schmitt's dissertation, written in 1992, appears to be almost entirely an exact translation of this work.<sup id="cite_ref-HVG-plagium_29-0" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-HVG-plagium-29"><span></span><span></span></a></sup>
 The accusation was denied by the Office of the President, who explained
 that Schmitt and Georgiev were friends and worked together, from the 
same sources,<sup id="cite_ref-HVG-plagium-denial_30-0" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-HVG-plagium-denial-30"><span></span><span></span></a></sup> which was in turn denied by Georgiev's daughter.<sup id="cite_ref-31" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-31"><span></span><span></span></a></sup> HVG's website revealed on 19 January, that he also plagiarized 17 pages from a work written by German <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Klaus_Heinemann&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Klaus Heinemann (page does not exist)">Klaus Heinemann</a> in 1991,<sup id="cite_ref-32" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-32"><span></span><span></span></a></sup>
 thus increasing the number of proven copied pages to 213 (95%) in the 
225-page document. Further plagiarized sources were identified<sup id="cite_ref-33" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-33"><span></span><span></span></a></sup> by readers of a Hungarian website on 29 March. Among others, Schmitt has included word-by-word translations from a work by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_DeFrantz" title="Anita DeFrantz">Anita DeFrantz</a> without referencing it at all. Anita DeFrantz happens to be the one who recommended<sup id="cite_ref-34" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-34"><span></span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-35" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-35"><span></span></a></sup> Schmitt's daughter Petra for a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Southern_California" title="University of Southern California">University of Southern California</a> tennis scholarship during the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Winter_Olympic_bid_scandal" title="2002 Winter Olympic bid scandal">Salt Lake City Olympic bid</a>. (Petra Schmitt went on to make All-American of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercollegiate_Tennis_Association" title="Intercollegiate Tennis Association">Intercollegiate Tennis Association</a>.)</p>

<p>A five-member investigating committee at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University" title="Semmelweis University">Semmelweis University</a> confirmed the plagiarism,<sup id="cite_ref-36" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-36"><span></span></a></sup>
 and concluded that despite the "procedural shortcomings," the 
dissertation did formally satisfy the practices of the time. The 
committee's report, issued on 27 March, blamed the <i>Testnevelési Egyetem</i>
 for not revealing the copied sources, but fell short of putting any 
blame on Schmitt ("the author may have thought that his dissertation 
satisfied the requirements").<sup id="cite_ref-37" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-37"><span></span><span></span></a></sup> A minority report was issued by the single non-faculty member of the committee, which called for the revocation of the title.<sup id="cite_ref-38" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-38"><span></span><span></span></a></sup>
 Schmitt had met the president of the investigating committee and told 
him that his (Schmitt's) good faith cannot be questioned, since he was 
not alerted by his advisor and doctoral committee about any possible 
shortcomings.</p>
<p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University" title="Semmelweis University">Semmelweis University</a> revoked Schmitt's academic title on 29 March 2012.<sup id="cite_ref-39" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-39"><span></span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-sote_nemdoktor_40-0" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-sote_nemdoktor-40"><span></span></a></sup></p>

<p>Following the Senate's decision, Schmitt appeared in two heavily 
orchestrated interviews on state television and radio channels (M1 and 
MR1)<sup id="cite_ref-41" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-41"><span></span></a></sup>. He argued that the committee's report did not put the blame on him, and disputed the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University" title="Semmelweis University">Semmelweis University</a>
 Senate's authority to revoke his title. (Later, the president of the 
Hungarian Accreditation Committee announced that the decision of the 
University Senate was legitimate according to relevant regulations.<sup id="cite_ref-index_legal_02_42-0" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-index_legal_02-42"><span></span></a></sup>)
 He asserted that his conscience is clear and that he refuses the 
resign. Schmitt also vowed in the interviews that he will complete a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ph.D." title="Ph.D." class="mw-redirect">Ph.D.</a> dissertation. Over the weekend, protesters and many commentators in the media called for his resignation<sup id="cite_ref-resigns.cnn_43-0" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-resigns.cnn-43"><span></span><span></span></a></sup>. On April 1, 2012, the Rector of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University" title="Semmelweis University">Semmelweis University</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tivadar_Tulassay" title="Tivadar Tulassay">Tivadar Tulassay</a> announced his resignation<sup id="cite_ref-44" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-44"><span></span></a></sup>
 explaining that he wants to save the University from the harmful 
consequences of the government's complete lack of support for him. On 
April 2, 2012 Schmitt gave the Hungarian Parliament his resignation<sup id="cite_ref-index_resigned_02_2-1" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-index_resigned_02-2"><span> </span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-resigns.cnn_43-1" class="reference"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-resigns.cnn-43"><span></span></a></sup>where
 he reiterated that his conscience was clear, vowed again that he will 
complete a Ph.D. program, and threatened to launch a lawsuit against <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University" title="Semmelweis University">Semmelweis University</a>.</p>
<p>The controversies escalated even to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOC" title="IOC" class="mw-redirect">IOC</a>,
 and its spokesman, Mark Adams, informed news sources that "The IOC will
 ask to receive the reports related to this case, study them and then
