<p class="" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt;line-height:13pt"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">This inaugural seminar
of the Asia Pacific Community Music Network (APCMN) will be held in Brisbane,
Australia from 19-20 November 2013. The seminar will bring together community
music practitioners and scholars to celebrate and explore the music-making practices,
pedagogies, and cultural politics that are currently shaping community music in
this region. </span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">The seminar acknowledges that the Asia Pacific (including,
but not limited to, East Asia, South and Southeast Asia, and Oceania) is vast
and diverse, and seeks to represent this diversity of contexts and repertoires.
We welcome community music practitioners and scholars who live and work in this
region, or those from other parts of the world who focus on this region in
their work.</span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial"></span></p>

<p class="" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt;line-height:13pt"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">Community music
practitioners and scholars are invited to submit proposals for paper/workshops/performances/roundtables/online
presentations that explore community music making in the Asia Pacific region.
In their submissions authors are encouraged to reflect upon one or more of the
following questions: 1) What is special about the practice/s of community music
in this region? 2) What specific role/s does music play in these cultural
contexts? 3) What are some of the particular meanings that people ascribe to </span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">community
music practices in this region</span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">? 4) How do ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’ musics interact with one
another, if at all? 5) What learning and teaching approaches can be found in
this region? 6) How does community music contribute towards a sense of
well-being and/or social justice in these cultural contexts? </span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">Abstracts should be emailed to Brydie-Leigh Bartleet (</span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial"><a href="mailto:b.bartleet@griffith.edu.au" target="_blank">b.bartleet@griffith.edu.au</a>

<p class="" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt;line-height:13pt"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">This network is part of the International Society for Music
Education’s Community Music Activity Commission, and serves as a vehicle for
activating relationships, developing intercultural partnerships, and
disseminating research about community music in this region. It was formed in
China in July 2010 at the ISME World Conference.</span></p>

<p class="" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt;line-height:13pt"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">The APCMN seminar is
being held in conjunction with the International Music Council’s (IMC) World
Forum on Music (21-24 November. See <a href="http://worldforumonmusic.org/" target="_blank">http://worldforumonmusic.org/</a></span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial"> ) </span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">The IMC was founded in 1949 by
UNESCO, and is the world's largest network of organizations, institutions and
individuals working in the field of music. The IMC promotes musical diversity,
access to culture for all and unites organizations in some 150 countries
worldwide in building peace and understanding among peoples of all cultures and
heritage. The forum will primarily revolve around the key conditions for a
vibrant and diverse musical future for the planet: issues of sustainability in
general, and particularly engaging people in listening to, making and creating
music. Community musicians of the Asia Pacific will play a key role in sharing </span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">some of the </span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">great
musical "treasures" from this region at the forum. A</span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">PCMN delegates will also receive a discounted
rate to the forum.</span></p>

<p class="" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt;line-height:13pt"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial">Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University is one of
Australia's leading music schools, with a reputation for excellence across a
range of specialisations, including music and the arts in the Asia Pacific
Region. The Conservatorium houses a 600-seat theatre with the best acoustics in
the southern hemisphere, a 200 seat recital hall, a 150-seat orchestral hall,
the latest teaching facilities and one of Australia's best music libraries. Ideally
located in Brisbane's picturesque South Bank Parklands, the campus is only a
10-minute walk from the Brisbane CBD and is adjacent to the Queensland Art
Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, the State Library, Museum, Performing Arts
Complex and the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre. It also boasts a
major train station and bus station, and South Bank is within walking distance
of numerous accommodation options, ranging from budget to boutique hotels.</span></p>
