De 1998 até 2003, o festival ocorreu na Cidade de Goiás, antiga capital do estado. Em 2004, o evento foi transferido para Goiânia e passou a ser realizado bienalmente nesta capital. As versões seguintes continuaram em Goiânia e em 2013, buscando suas raízes, o Festival de Artes de Goiás retorna à antiga capital, [re]encontrando suas origens.
