Durante su<span class=textexposedshow>a permanência à frente da Divisão de Música e Arquivo Sonoro, organizou 38 exposições, muitas delas com edição de catálogos, e transformou a Divisão em um dos mais importantes acervos musicais existentes na América Latina, relevante para a investigação histórica e musicológica.</span><o:p></o:p></span></p><div><p style='mso-margin-top-alt:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:4.5pt;margin-left:0in'><span style='font-size:10.5pt'>Convidada pela União Pan-americana, atual OEA, exerceu, de 1947 a 1949, a função de assistente do musicólogo Charles Seeger, então diretor da divisão de música da entidade.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p style='mso-margin-top-alt:4.5pt;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:4.5pt;margin-left:0in'><span style='font-size:10.5pt'>Ministrou cursos de organização de bibliotecas de música e participou de vários congressos da Associação Internacional de Bibliotecas, arquivos e centros de documentação de música (AIBM). Como vice-presidente desta associação, de 1965/74, colaborou em vários projetos da entidade, destacando-se o RISM (Répertoire International des Sources Musicales) e RILM (Répertoire International de Litterature Musicale). Elizete Higino: "Conheci dona Mercedes pesquisando na Seção de Música da FBN, quando ainda funcionava onde hoje é o auditório. Comecei a trabalhar com ela em 1984 quando a seção de Música passou a ser Divisão e se mudou para o Palácio Gustavo Capanema. Ela era uma profissional séria, conhecedora do seu ofício, amava o que fazia e, sempre foi muito respeitada.
