CHARM/RMA ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON 'MUSICOLOGY AND RECORDINGS'

(ROYAL HOLLOWAY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, 13-15 SEPTEMBER 2007)

The 2007 Royal Musical Association Annual Conference will be hosted by CHARM
(the AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music),
at the Egham campus of Royal Holloway, University of London.

The conference theme is 'Musicology and recordings', and we intend this in
the broadest possible sense. For most people in today's world 'music' means
'recorded music': through records, broadcasts, and the internet,
technologies of reproduction have not only led to the emergence of new
musical genres but also transformed performance and composition in existing
genres, as well as fundamentally reshaping the production, dissemination,
consumption, and business of music. At the same time the use of recordings
has become an increasingly significant part of both research into and the
teaching of all kinds of music. We hope that proposals will reflect work
being carried out in the widest variety of musical traditions, cultural
contexts, or methodological approaches. The keynote lecture will be given by
Robert Philip (Open University).

Submissions are invited for individual papers (30 minutes including
discussion), themed sessions (three/four speakers, 90/120 minutes), and
round tables (90/120 minutes). Abstracts (200 words for individual papers,
or 600 words submitted by the proposed convenor for sessions and
roundtables) should be emailed no later than ***31 JANUARY 2007*** to the
CHARM Coordinator, Carol Chan (carol.chan em rhul.ac.uk). The programme
committee will make a final decision on abstracts by 1 March 2007, and
contributors will be notified as soon as possible thereafter.

Further information will be posted on the conference website (
http://www.charm.rhul.ac.uk/content/events/2007conference.html) as it
becomes available. For other queries, please contact Carol Chan in the first
instance.

DEMOS

Demo Sessions are an opportunity to support and discuss realized or
partially realized work with conference attendees, in an informal,
discursive way. Demos of technologies and applications that address the
topics listed above will be considered for selection.

Demonstrations are designed to give exhibitors an opportunity to show
material that benefits from having a physical presence at the conference. It
is important that there be a realized, demonstrable, working component to
all submissions to this category. This is not to say that Demos cannot be
sketches or further ideas or future plans for the project - but an activity,
process, action or actionable form of the concept must exist as part of the
Demo proposed.

Demos must include a 2 page poster to be displayed at the Demo Sessions and
included in the printed proceedings. The poster should address the
scientific/technical aspects of the project, acquired experiences and/or the
context of the development.

For those submitting papers, we will provide the possibility of scheduling
demo presentations within the dedicated Demo Sessions. The submission
procedure will allow that a Demo option be chosen for any Paper submission.
An accepted paper will not guarantee an accepted demo.

Accepted presentation types are:

- Demo (Demonstration space plus 2 pages in proceedings)

LIVE PERFORMANCES

A series of three evening concerts as well as 'NIME-at-night' events at
clubs will be organized during the conference to highlight creative use of
interactive instrument technology and performance systems. One of the
evening concerts will feature commissioned performers playing work from
their repertoire as well as pieces submitted through the Live Performances
call.

We welcome proposals for performances to be featured in the NIME 07
concerts.

Accepted presentation types are:

- Concert Performance (Performance slot plus program note in proceedings)

- Club Performance (Performance slot plus program note in proceedings)

- New Work for Commissioned Performer (Performance by commissioned performer
plus program note in proceedings)

INSTALLATIONS

The NIME Installations category is intended to address submissions that deal
with the subjects listed above, but are intended for public-space or art
gallery contexts. Accepted Installations will be shown for the full 3 days
of the conference, beginning on the morning on Thursday, June 7th and ending
in the evening on Saturday June 9th.

The Installations venue for NIME 2007 will also be open to the general
public. Installation submissions will be judge by artistic merit,
interactivity, relevance to NIME, innovation, exhibition history experience
and practicality criteria. A one-paragraph description of the Installation
project must be submitted with other required materials, and will be
included in the conference proceedings.

Accepted submissions to the Installation category will be exhibited in an
environment appropriate to a public-space and gallery context. NIME 2007 is
obtaining special facilities in New York City, near other conference events
for exhibition of accepted Installation projects.

Please check the NIME site in November for floor plan details and photos of
the space. The number of accepted submission will be partially subject to
available space.

Accepted presentation types are:

- Installations (Installation space plus brief description in proceedings)

SPECIAL FOCUS ON ROBOTICS AND MUSIC

NIME07 will include a number of events specially focused on robotics and
music. These will include a keynote speaker from the field of robotics and
music, a special workshop on the subject and a concert series the weekend
before NIME07.

Therefore, we are especially inviting submissions in all categories in the

SCHOENBERG ESSAY AWARD

THE MANNES INSTITUTE

Wayne Alpern, Director

Submissions are now being accepted from January 1 to March 1, 2007 for the
prestigious MANNES INSTITUTE MUSICAL ESSAY AWARD. Each year the Institute
honors an essay on the topic of its forthcoming summer program. The topic
for 2007 is Arnold Schoenberg and His Legacy. The winner will receive a cash
prize of $250 plus automatic admission to the SCHOENBERG INSTITUTE from June
24-27, 2007 at Mannes College of Music in New York City to present the
winning essay as a speech before the members of the Institute. Further
information regarding the Musical Essay Award and the 2007 Mannes Institute
on Schoenberg is available on the Institute's website at www.mannes.edu/mi.

The essay should be approximately fifteen minutes in duration. Please note
this award is NOT for a scholarly paper comparable to an article in an
academic journal, or even an analytic presentation at a traditional
conference. The style is informal, reflective, and discursive in the genre
of a personal essay, with an emphasis on imagination and wit, charm of
diction, ingenuity and erudition, insight and sincerity, creativity and
sophistication, oratorical flair, and the belletristic quality of the prose
itself.

The essay may relate to the overall topic of Schoenberg in any way. It may
be philosophical, poetic, personal, humorous, historical, metaphorical,
theoretical, or whimsical. Above all, it must engage readers and listeners
in a compelling, entertaining, thoughtful, sensitive, aesthetic, and
provoking manner.

The essay may have intellectual and musical content, references, and allusio
ns, but should contain no footnotes, bibliography, or analytic examples.
Winning essays may be considered for publication in a forthcoming periodical
entitled "The Musical Essayist."

Scholars from around the world are welcome to apply. Graduate students not
otherwise eligible to attend the Institute, junior and midlevel scholars
less likely to be admitted, and established scholars other than those on
this year's faculty are all eligible to win the award. Essays may be
submitted electronically as a pdf file or MS Word document to
mannesinstitute at aol.com, or by mail to the address indicated below. The
decision is rendered by a committee consisting of the Institute co-chairs
and director with faculty recommendations.

Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival 9-29 July 2007, USA

Deadline: 16 January 2007

July 9-29, 2007

Residency Program for composers and performers

The Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at Mass MoCA (the Massachusetts
Museum of Contemporary Art) is dedicated entirely to adventurous
contemporary music. We will write it. We will perform it. We will think
about it and we will talk about it. We will spend three weeks immersed in
recent music that has changed the world. Available studies include Balinese
music workshops, improvisation, as well as performance coaching, master
classes, music business seminars and more. Composers will have their works
performed. Players will perform publicly in ensembles sitting alongside
their teachers. There are daily performances in the museum galleries, free
and open to the public. And the residency concludes with a six-hour blow-out
Marathon Concert featuring performances by the student/faculty ensembles.

The faculty includes some of the most innovative musicians of our time.
These are musicians who have dedicated their lives to commissioning,
rehearsing, recording and performing music beyond the cutting edge. Our
special guest artist for 2007 is Don Byron. He will join us for the last
week of the festival.

The Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival will take place July 9 through July
29, 2007 at MASS MoCA, located in North Adams, Massachusetts. MASS MoCA

PAC contempla projetos do pianista Antonio Eduardo

Musica Brasileira", diz Antonio Eduardo.

No segundo projeto, A Musica Brasileira para Piano e Flauta, o pianista
divide a apresentacao com o flautista paulistano Aldo Barbieri. "O objetivo
Guarnieri e Villa-Lobos.

Eduardo, o novo ano promete muita atividade.

Pesquisando a obra do compositor santista,

14 - WORKSHOP FOR COMPOSERS: 9th Making New Waves Festival (DEADLINE
15/Jan - Trafo, HUNGRIA)

********************************************

De: http://www.iamic.net/node/216

The 9th Making New Waves Festival invites participation to workshops for
composers between the 16th and the 18th of February, 2007 at Trafo in
Budapest, Hungary.

I. 'resonances'

composition workshop led by: MAE (former Marteen Artenea Ensemble) and
Yannis Kyriakides - composer

Date: 16-18 February 2007

Place: Trafo - House for Contemporary Art

The 9th Making New Waves Festival invites participation to a three-day long
workshop for composers between the 16th and the 18th of February, 2007 at
Trafo (www.trafo.hu) in Budapest, Hungary. Selected compositions will be
rehearsed publicly by MAE and possibly performed at the closing concert (18
February) of the festival in Trafo.

MAE will give a concert on the 15th February, 2007 as part of the festival
programme with a title of 'sound basics', which starting point has been
'Still Lives', a piece by Alvin Lucier. In 'sound basics' the MAE delves
into the world of pure sound and live electronics. The focal point of this
concert will be the nature of sound and how we perceive it. It explores the
relation between the ensemble and live electronic media. The traditional
function of music with acoustic instruments will be stripped down and
moulded into any sound whatsoever through the medium of amplification and
computer processing.

The applicants are asked to send a 3-5 minute piece for the following
ensemble: doublebass, trombone, violin, recorder (blockflote) or
bass-recorder and voice (Alto). The pieces should possibly (but not
obligatorily) deal with musical space and/or electronic feedback technics.
Composers and musicians wishing to improvise with laptops are also invited
to participate actively at the workshop. The composers of the chosen pieces
must be present at the workshops anyway their compositions will not be
rehearsed and performed. Travel and accommodation expenses has to be covered
by the applicants themselves.

The application should contain a short CV and the score. To pieces using
electronics the composer should attach the technical descreption and a CD
containing sound material and/or software. Laptop performers should apply
with an idea and a plan for their work together with a CD containing sound
material and/or software. Applications must be sent to Andras Halmos
(secretary of Trafo - House of Contemporary Arts; andras em trafo.hu) to the
following address: Trafo - House for Contemporary Arts, Budapest, Liliom u.
41., 1094 HUNGARY. We prefer that you send your applications, scores in an
electronic format if possible!

Applications have to arrive by 15th of January 2007.

The application fee is 10 EUR that is to be payed either personally at Trafo
or through bank to the following bank account:

II. fluxus, freedom, new music improvisation workshop

led by: Johannes Kretz (A) - composer. laptop performer & Florian Hoelscher
(D) - pianist

Date: 17-18 February 2007

Place: Trafo - House for Contemporary Art

The 9th Making New Waves Festival invites participation to a two-day long
creative workshop between the 17th and 18the of February, 2007 at Trafo (
www.trafo.hu) in Budapest, Hungary.

The topic of the workshop is performance in the widest sense, involving
works by Ken Friedman, Earl Brown, Cornelius Cardew, Roman
Haubenstock-Ramati, Anestis Logothetis and others, as well as on the
participants fantasy and imagination. A catalogue of 500 possible fluxus
actions as well as graphical scores by the Austrian composers Roman
Haubenstock-Ramati and Anestis Logothetis will serve as a stimulus to
develop an artistic collaboration between the participants. The aim is to
develop a common performance of musical actions reflecting and questioning
the concert situation, partly in an dadaist fashion, but also by highlighting
the original aspect of music performance being a deep human ritual. The
means of electronic music will be used to create a space for these actions
and to establish sound and music out of the natural noises of performing,
breathing, moving.

At the end of the workshop the participants will perform at the closing
concert (18 February) of the festival in Trafo.

Everybody interested in creation of improvised music and art with or without
experience in electronic music is invited to participate actively at the
workshop.

Applications with a short CV should be sent to Julia Horvath (secretary of
Making New Waves) by email: julia70 em freemail.hu by 5 Februar 2007. The
application fee is 10 EUR that is to be payed through bank to the following

swift: aebbhuhb

At the bank transmission please note: MNW-Fluxus Workshop.
