*Research keywords:* nanomedicine, targeted drug delivery for joint
diseases; anti-inflammatory delivery systems; antimicrobial formulations,
wound healing, bone cements, orthopaedic devices, nanomechanical properties
of cells.

Dr. Polina Prokopovich joined the Cardiff School of Pharmacy in January
2011 as Cardiff Academic Fellow. She is currently Senior Lecturer in
Nanotechnology and Biomaterials, her research interests are in the area of
Nano - Materials/Biomaterials and Drug Delivery. In particular, her
research focuses on development of nanocomposites for the targeted delivery
of drugs for joint diseases; such as to enhance anti-arthritis treatments
using cartilage-specific binding agents, anti-inflammatory molecules to
prevent wear particles-induced aseptic loosening and antibiotic and
non-antibiotic antimicrobial agents to prevent prosthetic joint infections
following cemented or uncemented arthroplasty and multifunctional hydrogels
as bone graft materials. Dr. Prokopovich research also encompasses also the
study of cells nanomechanical and surface properties post exposure to
metal, ceramic and polymeric wear particles or in response to specific
stimuli and the development of in silico models for the prediction of the
interactions between nanoparticles and membranes/polymers for computer
aided drug discovery. Research in Dr. Prokopovich’s group is sponsored by
Wellcome Trust, Welsh Government, Innovate UK, EU funds and industries.
