Na SNCT serão promovidas e estimuladas em todo o país, atividades de difusão e de aproximação social de conhecimentos científicos e tecnológicos relacionados com o tema, que foi escolhido em função de ser o tema da Conferência Rio+20, evento organizado pela Organização das Nações Unidas, que ocorreu no Brasil em junho de 2012. Um objetivo da SNCT 2012 será debater em escolas, universidades, comunidades e locais públicos, os diversos aspectos envolvidos no estabelecimento de uma economia verde, bem como os desafios da sustentabilidade nas suas dimensões ambiental, econômica e social.
