Call for Papers:

Symposium on Shostakovitch and Music in the Soviet Union

Abstracts are invited for a symposium, to be held at Rutgers University,

New Brunswick, New Jersey, to mark the centenary of the birth of Dmitri
Shostakovitch. The symposium will take place on April 7-9, 2006, under
the auspices of Mason Gross School of the Arts, and in association with
a series of concerts. Performers will include Alexander Ivashkin, Boris
Berman, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the Alexander Quartet.

Proposals are welcome on any aspect of the life, works and working
environment of Shostakovitch, and contemporary music in the Soviet
Union. Possible topics include Shostakovitch's style and idiom;
stylistic relationships to contemporary Soviet composers; relations to
Western composers; Soviet realism; the Soviet symphony; film music,
Shostakovitch's posthumous reputation.

Abstracts should be no more than 300 words in length, and should include

the author's name, title, and affiliation. Deadline for receipt of
abstracts is December 31, 2005. Abstracts should be sent, by e-mail
attachment, to kirkman em rci.rutgers.edu.
