SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
The College Music Society
Institute for Music History Pedagogy
June 8-10, 2006
Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana 46208
James R. Briscoe, PhD, Institute Director and CMS Board Member for
Musicology
The Institute is devoted to teaching the undergraduate Western Music
History Survey for majors. We will inquire into new pedagogies of music
history; repertories such as American, popular, women's and ethnic
music; and the other arts related to music history. Participants will be
graduate students in musicology, those recently employed, long-term
teachers of the Music History Survey, and colleagues who are not
musicologists but teach the Survey.
Many argue that teaching the history of Western music to majors must
significantly be "thickened" by considering cultural dimensions,
critical theories, popular music, and ethnic and gender issues. How
honestly to teach concepts in which one is not a specialist, to master
necessary technologies, approach textbooks and resources, and engage
film music and the visual arts are questions the Institute will entertain.
Institute Registration is $300. Click here for a full description of the
