THE MANNES INSTITUTE

Submissions are being accepted for the new MUSICAL ESSAY AWARD sponsored by
Mannes Institute for Advanced Studies in Music. Each year the Institute
honors
a single scholar by giving an award for an essay on the topic of the
forthcoming summer Institute. The topic this year is Chromaticism. The
winner will
receive a cash prize of $500, plus automatic admission to the MANNES
INSTITUTE ON
CHROMATICISM @ YALE UNIVERSITY from June 22-25, 2006, where they will
present
the winning essay as a speech before the members of the Institute. The
deadline for submissions is March 1.

The essay should be approximately twenty minutes in duration. The style is
creative nonfiction, with an emphasis on imagination, charm, insight,
sophistication, breadth of knowledge, and the belletristic quality of
the prose itself.
The subject may relate to the overall topic of Chromaticism in any way, and
may be historical, philosophical, theoretical, musicological, sociological,
psychological, poetic, critical, humorous, metaphorical, and/or personal in
nature. Above all, it should engage readers and listeners in a compelling,
entertaining, thoughtful, aesthetic, and reflective manner. This award
is not for a
detailed scholarly exposition comparable to an article in an academic
journal, or
even a formal paper at a conference, but is more akin to a keynote address.
The essay may have intellectual and musical content, references, and
allusions,
but should contain no footnotes, bibliography, or detailed analytic
examples.
Winning essays may be considered for publication in a forthcoming
periodical
entitled "The Musical Essayist."

Further information regarding the Musical Essay Award and the 2006
Mannes Inst
itute on Chromaticism is available on the Institute's website at
www.mannes.edu/mi. Anyone, including graduate students not otherwise
eligible for
admission to the Institute, and established scholars other than those on
this year’s
faculty, is eligible to win.

Essays may be submitted electronically as a pdf file or MS Word document to
mannesinstitute em aol.com, or by mail to the Mannes Institute for Advanced
Studies in Music, 150 West 85th Street, New York, NY 10024. Final
adjudication will
be rendered by a committee consisting of the faculty co-chairs and
director of
the Institute.
