A One-day Symposium on New Music

University College Cork, Ireland, Friday 24 March 2006

Announcement and Call for Papers

The Department of Music at University College Cork is pleased to announce
a one-day symposium focussing on intersections and divisions between the
so-called New Complexity and Simplicity movements.

The symposium will take place in the Department of Music, Sunday's Well
Road, Cork on Friday 24 March 2006.

We welcome proposals for short individual papers (max. 20 minutes) on any
aspect of contemporary music related to the symposium's broad theme, and
encourage proposals which relate to the particular focuses of our guest
speakers, who will include:

Keith Potter (Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK): "The Spirit
of '76: why did musical minimalism become musical post-minimalism - and
does it matter?"
Neil Heyde (Royal Academy of Music, and cellist with the Kreutzer Quartet)
on the performance of contemporary music, particularly Brian Ferneyhough's
Time and Motion Study II
Christopher Fox (University of Huddersfield, UK) who will be discussing
his recent compositional work

The symposium will also include performances by:

Neil Heyde (cello) and Paul Archbold (electronics), to include Brian
Ferneyhough's Time and Motion Study II
Andrew Zolinsky (piano), with a mixture works by experimental and complex
composers

Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and should be sent to
m.iddon em ucc.ie either as an attachment or as text within the body of the
message. Please include any AV requirements within the body of the mail.

Deadline for submissions: 13 February 2006

The full programme will be announced by 20 February 2006. For any queries

Presenters will have free entrance to the conference, all concerts and
refreshments. The fee for the day is €20/€10 including entrance to
conference, all concerts and refreshments.
