Call for Papers and Performances: French Music: Performance and Analysis
November 15th—19th, 2007
Brigham Young University-Hawaii
The conference has as general themes the performance and analysis of
French music. Repertoire is limited to art music of the 19th and
20th-centuries including foreign-born composers who influenced
compositional practice over an extended period of time ( e.g. Chopin),
or composers who relocated to France for a sizeable portion of their
careers (e.g. the American composer Noël Lee). Because of the unique
location of the host institution, it also explores the influence of
Pacific and Asian music(s) on French composers. Ideally, the conference
is targeted at musicians with an interest in French music and the
possibility of analysis informing performance; likewise, to those who
see the potential of performance benefiting analytical understanding.
Format: guidelines
Abstracts of 250 words or less may propose long papers (20 minutes) or
lecture recitals (45 minutes). Applicants opting for the lecture-recital
format should also submit a recent, unedited recording along with the
abstract. The deadline for submission is June 1st, 2007.
Proposals which address one or more of the following areas will be given
priority consideration by the organizing committee:
* Papers and/or performances which demonstrate clear relationships
between music(s) of Pacific, Asian and French composers
* The analysis of specific works in which the findings have direct
relevance to performance
* Lecture-recitals which articulate a musical link between analysis and
performance
* The derivation of narrative from analytical understanding
* New approaches to analysis through the study of performance
* Editorial practice which considers performance and analysis together
* Interactions between composer and performer
* Performance practice which takes analysis and recordings into account
Evening events
As performance is a central focus of the conference, several evening
concerts will be offered in the McKay auditorium on the campus of
BYU-Hawaii. Roy Howat and Wendy Hiscocks will present a duo-piano
recital which includes Debussy's 'En blanc et noir' and Chabrier's
'Trois valses romantiques'. Pianist Scott McCarrey will offer a solo
recital of works by Ravel and Poulenc, this performance to include the
world premiere of a new piece by Wendy Hiscocks commissioned for the
conference.
Additional keynote speakers, evening performances, fees and registration
details will be announced in the near future at
