The MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music at Bowling Green State
University's College of Musical Arts invites proposals for papers for
a special session on "Chinese Musical Influences in Contemporary
Western Art Music." The paper session will take place during the
internationally acclaimed BGSU New Music & Art Festival to be held
October 17-20, 2007. Special guests at the festival include composer
Chen Yi (Cravens/Millsap/Missouri Distinguished Professor at the
Conservatory of the University of Missouri-Kansas City), pipa player
Zhou Yi, and the Enso String Quartet. We are especially interested in
papers that address the music of Chen Yi in addition to the more
general topic of the influence of Chinese music and/or philosophy on
the music of living art-music composers. The papers will be scheduled
in thirty-minute time slots (twenty for the paper and ten for
discussion).

The festival will consist of approximately six concerts of
contemporary music, video screenings, and will also include a world
music concert consisting of modern works for pipa, Balinese gamelan,
and taiko drum ensemble. The composers whose works are programmed
will be present at the festival.

Please email abstracts of 500 words or less in PDF or MS Word format
to Mikel Kuehn, Director, MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music
(mkuehn at bgsu.edu <http://bgsu.edu>). Abstracts should not identify
the author and
should clearly outline the objective of the paper, its relationship
to the session topic, and should cite specific composers/works that
will be addressed. The deadline for abstracts is July 1, 2007. Three
papers will be chosen for the session and each participant will
receive a small travel honorarium ($100).
