CULTURAL COUNTERPOINTS:EXAMINING THE MUSICAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE US AND LATIN AMERICAA Conference in Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Indiana University Latin American Music CenterOct. 19-23, 2011, at the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University, BloomingtonCall for PapersExtended submission deadline: 5pm EST, June 1st, 2011.As a celebration of its 50th Anniversary, the Indiana University Latin American Music Center will hold a conference on a broad range of topics addressing historical and current musical exchanges between the U.S. and Latin America. The conference will take place at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University, between October 19th and October 23rd,2011.Proposals for papers and presentations must discuss the effects and impact of musical exchanges between the US and Latin America. As long as the central issue of cross-cultural impact is engaged, the proposals can address any historical period and repertoire stream
 (such art-, urban, popular or traditional music; film and  commercial music; etc.), as well as any aspect of the musical phenomenon (such as compositional style, specific works, aesthetics, analysis,  documentation, reception, migration, performance practice, etc.).Topics of particular interest to the Latin American Music Center include:The education, career, reception and documentation of Latin American composers in the USShifting identities, institutions and border culture between Mexico and the United States from the 16th century through the presentImpact of composers, conductors, performers, festivals, foundations, and institutions from the United States on Latin American musical developments and vice-versa.Cross-cultural impact of the rise of commercial music, radio, film and other media between the US and Latin AmericaImpact of American technology on composition and dissemination (e.g. Instituto Torcuato di Tella,Columbia University
 Electroacoustic music, commercial music)Cross-over between classical and popular genres and aspects of cross-cultural marketing and receptionAtlantic Studies relevant to Latin American-US exchangesThe legacies of Gerard Behague (in memoriam) and Robert StevensonThe legacies of the Latin American Music Center (Juan Orrego-Salas, Guillermo Espinosa)Application materials must include a 250-word abstract, a one-page double-spaced biography, and a completed contact information form, which can be found at the conference website or by request at lamc em indiana.edu. Applicants must submit all application materials by 5pm EST, May 1st, 2011 to lamc em indiana.edu.Length of paper should not exceed 20 minutes, allowing for an additional 10 minutes for questions and answers, for a total of 30 minutes per paper.For the purpose of engaging the wide population in Bloomington and at Indiana University, the conference will prefer papers written and presented in English. The
 program committee will consider papers in Spanish and Portuguese, but accepted non-English papers will amount to a maximum of 25% of all accepted papers.
