*Grade 7: Salary £29,099 p.a.*

A postdoctoral position is available from 1 July 2011, for a fixed two-year
term, working under the direction of Professor Georgina Born. The postholder
will be expected to scope and undertake one of the ethnographic sub-projects
of the European Research Council funded research programme, ‘Music,
Digitisation, Mediation: Towards Interdisciplinary Music Studies’ (MusDig).

The project forms one of six ethnographic sub-projects of the MusDig
programme. The post entails one year of ethnographic fieldwork in India
followed by one year engaged in analysis and writing up of the ethnography
based in Oxford, in collaboration with the rest of the MusDig research group
and with a commitment to engaging in comparative analysis across the
ethnographic sub-projects. The successful applicant will undertake fieldwork
studying a range of Indian music practices that have been transformed by
digital media; the precise foci will be determined in dialogue with
Professor Born.

The successful applicant should either already hold a PhD in ethnomusicology
or anthropology, or hold a relevant Bachelor/Masters degree and be about to
submit a thesis for their PhD, and be able to demonstrate that they will be
able to meet the following criteria in full: prior ethnographic experience
of a range of music genres in India, including both art and popular musics;
knowledge of current academic debates on the implications of digital
technologies and media for music; fluency in Hindi, proficiency in other
languages spoken in northern India (e.g. Marathi, Gujerati), and familiarity
with relevant scholarship in vernacular languages; familiarity with
scholarship on wider socio-historical contexts of musical developments in
the region and on Indian music sociology and history. The project requires
the candidate to have established working networks with Indian scholars and
with major Indian research institutions hosting research on the sociology or
anthropology of music. A strong working knowledge of digital technologies
for audio, video and web development, and of software such as Final Cut Pro,
Dreamweaver and Sound Forge, is also required.
