*Deadline Extended for Cornell University Department of Music Mellon
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Music Theory

*With the sponsorship of the Society for the Humanities, Cornell
University’s Department of Music invites applications for a two-year Mellon
Postdoctoral Fellowship starting on July 1, 2013, from scholars whose main
area of expertise is in post-tonal music theory. We are particularly
interested in candidates who demonstrate a creative engagement with
compositional and analytical approaches to art music from the mid-20th
century to the present.

The ideal candidate will have a research interest in emerging analytical
models of late 20th-century and 21st-century music. He or she also will be
able to frame the condition of “post-tonality” within the contexts of music
history, area studies, and cultural theory. In this respect, desirable
specialties include theories of sound, music technologies and media, music
cognition, and expertise in other repertoires or practices that might be
considered “post-tonal” in a broader sense.

The successful candidate will teach one upper-level and one
general-interest undergraduate course each year. The upper-level courses
should address historical and emergent post-tonal repertoires and
analytical models, which may include set-class theory, contour theory,
transformational theory, spectralist theory, interval theory, and rhythmic
theory; the general-interest courses should introduce post-tonal music and
address the intersections between post-tonal theory and cultural theory.
