Even on the standards of *baile funk*‘s violent favela milleu, the on-stage
murder of a young MC has shocked Brazil.

On Saturday night, Brazilian funk artist MC Daleste was shot and killed
with a single bullet to the chest while performing on stage in the city of
Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo state. The 20-year old MC, whose
real name is Daniel Pellegrine, was in the middle of announcing his next
song when a shot rang out in the crowd. Daleste crumbled to the floor.

It’s hard to watch.

Police say he died after being brought to a nearby hospital. He will be
buried in São Paulo on Tuesday morning.

MC Daleste was one of the top-billing artists in the young genre of *funk

*, a São Paulo-born variant on Rio’s favela funk in which the customary
lyrics about drugs and big booties are swapped out for tracks about about
luxury goods and the accumulation of wealth. Inspired by Brazil’s booming
economy, the style takes the material focus of contemporary US hip-hop and
grafts it onto Brazilian *baile funk*.

“He was a really good kid, with a good heart, full of ideas, making songs
every minute. Without ever appearing in the media, he came to become the
main idol for São Paulo youth, thanks to a limitless talent and a charisma
that conquered everyone who crossed his path,” says Renato Barreiros, a
community organizer and director of a documentary about *funk
ostentaçao*<http://vimeo.com/53679071>.
“He made thousands of young people happy with his songs, without ever doing
harm to anybody. He was murdered cowardly while he was doing his job.”

As of Monday afternoon, the police have not figured out who did the
shooting, nor have proposed any motive for the killing. MC Daleste’s army
of fans has been agitating on social media for the government step up and
do a proper investigation and serve justice for their fallen idol.
