The Integra Lab at Birmingham Conservatoire invites applications for a
three-year full-time PhD studentship.

A full-time bursary in line with the AHRC rate (outside London) will be
provided (currently ?13,726 per annum), and PhD fees at Home/EU rate will
be provided.

The studentship is offered for commencement in September 2014 and will be
based at the Integra Lab facility in Birmingham Conservatoire?s Music
Technology department.

Integra Lab is an interdisciplinary research lab, with a focus on
musician-computer interaction. Our goal is to create new technologies that
empower, inspire and delight musicians. Integra Lab provides a unique
opportunity for researchers in interactive music technology, user-centred
design and digital signal processing to enhance musical experience through
direct collaboration with performers and composers.

We are therefore seeking to fund a high-calibre applicant for a 3-year PhD
studentship closely aligned with Integra Lab?s current research:

        ? musician-centred interface design

? touch-based and gesture-controlled environments for music creation

? information visualisation in musical interaction

? semantic models for interactive music systems

There will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to work closely
with the Integra Live development team and to contribute to the ongoing
design and development of the software. Proposals explicitly linked to
Integra Live, with a strong design or software development component are
particularly welcome.

Further details about the lab can be found here: http://integra.io/lab

Current part-time students may apply for a two- or three-year full-time
programme.
Birmingham Conservatoire enjoys a large and very lively research community,
with more than 40 students currently enrolled on doctoral degrees in
composition, music technology and musicology. In the 2008 Research
Assessment Exercise it came third among UK conservatoires and almost 50% of
its research outputs were judged to be either world-leading or
internationally excellent. It has awarded PhDs since 1993 and has an
excellent completion rate.
