> Dear Friends,
>
> I just received this message on a flute list to which I belong. It relays sad news about the death of Irna Priore-Coelho, whom a number of you may have known. I first met Irna when she read a paper on Brazilian musician, Gaetano Veloso, at a regional SMT conference, and subsequently followed her and her work. This statement comes from her husband, Tadeu. Please note that a scholarship fund has been established in her name.

> Irna Fernanda Priore-Coelho finished the race and the good fight with endurance on May 29, 2014, just before 1 pm, after a valiant battle with Hurthle cell thyroid cancer. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, friend and professor. She, like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in Daniel 3:23, endured the fire with her faith intact.
> Irna Priore was born on November 24,1963 in São Paulo to Nair and Hercules Priore. Dr. Priore received her PhD in Music Theory from University of Iowa, completed a fellowship at Mannes Institute for Advanced Studies in Music Theory, held a DMA (doctor of musical arts) in flute performance from City University of New York, a Masters in flute performance from The City University of New York - Queens College, and a Bachelors in Flute Performance from Santa Marcelina College, SP Brazil.
> Irna Priore was a tenured Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro since 2011. Her publications appeared in Theoria, Theory and Practice, Analytical Approaches to World Music Journal, Indiana Theory Review, etc. She received grants to conduct research at the International Institute of Darmstadt, RAI in Milan, Italy, Universal Editions in Vienna, and the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel. She served on the editorial board of the Analytical Approaches to World Music Journal and Opus Magazine. She served as reviewer for the Journal of Schenkerian Studies, Journal of American Music, and Opus Magazine. Her research interests were the Darmstadt School, Luciano Berio, and Brazilian popular music.
> A quiet but unwavering voice for diversity in her school and in her discipline, she advocated for women and minorities who had talent and interest, but not, perhaps, earlier encouragement or preparation. She volunteered in pregnancy crisis centers in Iowa and Winston-Salem. She played piano for the Hispanic Ministry at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem where she was an active member. She was a committed member of the Calvary Baptist Day School prayer group, which along with many cherished friends became a part of her family during her long battle with cancer. Even during times of immense pain she glorified Christ in her words and actions, and her life was a testimony to all who met her.
> Irna is survived by her husband, Tadeu Coelho and son Lucas, her proudest achievement, who is completing his first year at MIT. She is also survived by her father Hercules Priore, sisters Nira, Inar and brother Felipe, her Aunt Eliana, her especially cherished brothers-in-law Luiz, Neto and Carlos, sisters-in-law and cherished nieces and nephews, Beatriz, Rodrigo, Rafaela, Liliana, Gabriela and Julia.
> She was preceded in death by her mother, Nair, maternal grandparents, Angelina and Plinio Isique and paternal grandparents, Gioconda and Luiz Priore.
> A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 pm on Monday, June 2nd, 2014 at Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. Dr. Gary Chapman will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service.
> In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hispanic Ministry of Calvary Baptist Church or Calvary Baptist Day School, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. Alternatively, a memorial scholarship fund has been established in Irna's name to support students who are studying music theory at UNCG. You may send checks made out to UNCG to: UNCG Advancement Services, PO Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402-6170; please indicate that it is for the Dr. Irna Priore Memorial Scholarship Fund in Music Theory.
> The family would like to thank Dr. Kamal Ajam, Dr. Augoustides, Dr. Tony Bleyer, Dr. John Birkedal and Dr. Glen Lesser for championing Irna’s quest for the treatment of her rare cancer and also the staff of the Wake Forest Baptist Hospital Cancer Center who cared for Irna so well and were such a blessing during this difficult time.
