The School of Music of Louisiana State University (LSU) is pleased to announce Symposium on Prokofiev and the Russian Tradition. The conference coincides with the world premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 6, which will be performed at LSU. Incomplete and unpublished upon Prokofiev’s death, the piano concerto has recently been finished by Norbert Palej, with the assistance of Gabriel Prokofiev (Sergei Prokofiev’s grandson).

The present conference aims to expand our current knowledge and understanding of not only the music of Prokofiev but also of Russian music, its traditions, its influences, and its continued legacy (in both Russia and in the West). The conference committee is particularly interested in receiving paper proposals on subjects that have received little attention in English-language scholarship.

The program committee invites proposals on any aspect of Sergei Prokofiev’s music (both analytical and/or historical), as well as the following themes:

Russian school of pianism
Prokofiev’s legacy
Music of Scriabin, Rachmaninov, and Shostakovich
Soviet film music
Soviet repressed, avant-garde music
Folk music in Soviet music
Russian theoretical thought in twentieth-century music
Performance and analysis in Russian music
Proposals are invited for individual papers or lecture-recitals, with the following guidelines:

Individual papers (20 minutes long, with 10 minutes for discussion)
Lecture-recitals (20 minutes long, with 10 minutes for discussion).
Proposals should be prepared as follows:

Individual papers: maximum 250 words
Lecture Recitals/Performances: 250-word summary (with CV, sample recording, and presentation details).
All proposals should be submitted no later than Friday 27 February 2015 by email at Prokofiev2016 em lsu.edu.

Any questions can be directed to Inessa Bazayev ibazayev em lsu.edu the director of the event.

The working language of the conference will be English.
