*Anthropology is always in constant change.* Whilst keeping old and
building new relationships with several other disciplines, it has proven to
be able to fill unique scholarly niches that have granted the discipline a
distinct and recognizable profile. The 18th IUAES world meeting offers a
large umbrella to discuss the many old and new encounters that made
anthropology as it is practiced today, as well as to prospect for what
anthropology might be in the future. It intends to embrace different
research, methodological and theoretical interests of cultural and social
anthropologists, of physical anthropologists, archaeologists and linguists.

Research is made of encounters and findings. What are the encounters that
inform anthropologists' findings? In a changing globalized world, how has
anthropological knowledge persisted and how will it tackle the political
and epistemological challenges of our times?

To discuss and deepen this theme, the 18th World Congress offers the
following axes of work:

The 18th World Congress of the International Union of Anthropological and
Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) has the following general subject: The past,
present and future of anthropological knowledge. It will be hosted by the
Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Florianópolis, the capital city of
the brazilian southern state of Santa Catarina, with the support of
the Brazilian
Association of Anthropology (ABA). This will be the first world congress of
anthropology to be held in South America since a first meeting in London in
1934.

The Congress Program was prepared by a joint scientific committee made up
of members of the ABA and the IUAES. Anthropologists working in all fields
of the discipline are welcome to submit their proposals. We are proud to
organize this event that will be a truly memorable world congress.
