During the so-called Baroque era, the Habsburg emperors stimulated an
extraordinary production of Italian texts for music, in terms of quantity
and quality. For this reason Vienna was, for at least two centuries, a
leading centre of music on Italian texts: drammi per musica and sepolcri,
but also cantatas, oratori, serenate and rappresentazioni sacre.

Librettists from all over Italy established their careers in Vienna and
adapted their own styles to the local poetic and dramatic taste, with
particular attention to the function their works were to achieve in the
Viennese cultural and political context. Authors such as Niccolò Minato,
Apostolo Zeno, Pietro Metastasio, and Lorenzo Da Ponte contributed to the
establishment of the ideal grandeur that the Holy Roman emperors wanted to
disseminate all over Europe, and through their poetic and dramaturgical
choices they developed the public confirmation of the Habsburg power in
both sacred and secular contexts.

Thanks to a number of publications and critical editions devoted to the
Italian librettists’ works from the seventeenth century on, the attention
towards the librettos has progressively increased. The International
conference I libretti italiani a Vienna tra Sei e Settecento aims at
stimulating and renewing the debate on this topic. The features and the
functions of these literary and musical witnesses of the operatic Italian
Viennese milieu will be at the core of the conference.

We welcome proposals in every field related to the Viennese oriented
libretto studies as individual papers (20 minutes long, with 10 minutes for
