Royal Northern College of Music PhD Research Studentships*Royal Northern
College of Music*

The RNCM is offering two PhD Research Studentships for successful applicants
to the PhD degree programme who commence study in the academic year 2010-11.

Both Studentships cover tuition fees (£3,390 full-time; £1,690 part-time),
and one Studentship also includes a maintenance grant (£13,290 full-time;
£7,970 part-time).

The Studentships will be awarded on a competitive basis and are initially
given for one year, but will normally be tenable for up to three years
(full-time study) or six years (part-time study), subject to satisfactory
academic progress. Students initially registered for an MPhil degree are
also eligible.

Suitably qualified holders of Research Studentships may also be offered paid
Graduate Teaching Assistant opportunities in the College, depending on the
availability of appropriate teaching work. Note that in the case of the
holder of the maintenance grant, any such teaching would be paid in lieu of
the equivalent amount of maintenance grant.

The RNCM is firmly established as a leading centre for advanced study not
only in music performance and composition but also in theoretical and
applied music research. Its MPhil/PhD programme provides an opportunity to
conduct high-level research within the dynamic, creative, and supportive
environment of an internationally recognised conservatoire.

The RNCM currently offers MPhil and PhD degrees in the following areas of
music research:

   - Performance - including performance practice and practice-as-research
   - Composition - in a variety of media and genres
   - Musicology - including the historical, analytical and cultural study of
   music
   - Music Psychology - including both quantitative and qualitative research
in the fields of expert music performance and training; music education and
   pedagogy; music and health

The PhD in Musicology or Music Psychology focuses on an 80,000-word thesis.
The pathways in Performance and Composition lead towards a series of
performances of c.180 minutes duration or a portfolio of compositions of
c.120 minutes duration, supported by a critical commentary of 20,000 words.
Separate MPhil programmes are also available. Students receive an
individually negotiated package of supporting studies delivered by the RNCM
and Manchester Metropolitan University, and one-to-one supervision through a
supervisory team.

All candidates who are offered a place for either PhD or MPhil study and
agree to take up the offer to commence study in the year 2010-11 will
automatically be entitled to apply for a Research Studentship award.
Candidates may be required to submit written or recorded materials in
support of their application for an award, in addition to those provided for
their initial application for study.
