Contributions are invited to this two-day symposium, the fourth of an
ongoing series dedicated towards international exchange in research and
performance to advance understanding and recognition of the repertories and
practices of Latin American Music.

Initially founded to emphasize choral and vocal literature, the scope of
the symposia has broadened to include a full range of musical practice and
media.

The 2013 symposium marks the fourth supported by the Center for Latin
American Music at the University of Arizona School of Music and the
Institute for Arts in the Americas in the College of Fine Arts. The
symposium is also supported by the University of Arizona's Confluence
Center for Creative Inquiry and other university and community partners
(see home page).

As with our previous symposia, our goal is to unite music scholarship with
performance and dissemination of music in formal and popular settings. All
participants are encouraged to submit their presentations for publication
in our web-based proceedings series. This year's theme "Complexities of
Cultural Representation in the Performance of Latin American Music," is
inspired by a desire to explore the potential of performance study in
popular music and the humanities to inform the creation and performance of
Latin American art music.

This year's topic, "Complexities of Cultural Representation in the
Performance of Latin American Music," explores the expectations listeners
bring to performances of Latin American music in different contexts and
invites consideration of how composers, performers, researchers, and
various publics should respond. We invite participants to reflect on the
practical demands of artistic performance making use of perspectives
derived from contemporary scholarship on performance practice as cultural
action.

Questions related to the topic "Complexities of Cultural Representation in
the Performance of Latin American Music," include: 1) When are expectations
of cultural representation empowering, or confining? 2) What can we learn
from how performers, composers and listeners have productively engaged or
thwarted cultural expectations? 3) Can practical strategies for creation
and performance be extracted from contemporary scholarship on performance
practice? 4) Can we separate cultural representation from cultural
politics? 5) How may performance studies inform our understanding of
musical representation in Latin American art music?

We welcome contributions in the formats of paper, panels, informative
posters, roundtables, workshops and performances. We invite participates to
address the symposium theme, addressing the questions above or offering
additional perspectives.

To stimulate dialogue and contextualize our initial perspectives, we offer
a recommended reading
