Hi,

My name is Giulia Zampini and I am a researcher and lecturer in criminology
at the University of Greenwich. Myself and two research partners, a
film-maker and an activist, have teamed up for a project that aims to
explore the experiences of people who use drugs in social and music
settings, and particularly at clubs, festivals and other social events.

We are interested in people’s past and present experiences of drug-taking
in such contexts, and particularly whether drug-taking in social and music
spaces enhances feelings of wellbeing, socialisation, connection to others,
belonging, and pleasure. If this resonates with you, then we would like to
invite you participate.

But what will this involve?

We aim to collect participants’ narratives together to make a short film,
because we believe such narratives are important and deserve to be heard
and shared widely. The medium of film allows for this, while also ensuring
participants can retain a sense of ownership over their narratives.

While presenting this opportunity, we understand that many of those who
would like to become involved may be hesitant due to possible
repercussions. But then that’s what this project is all about!

We are here to facilitate your storytelling however you may feel
comfortable. Where one person may be happy to speak on camera, another may
choose to perform an illustration, a poem read by someone else, and of
course voice modulation for those who want to speak, but not be recognised.

In other words, the whole point of the project is to find creative ways of
breaking the taboos and allowing ordinary people to talk about the
extraordinary, while offering full protection to those who need it.

For all participants to the project, personal information, contact details
and the like will be held by the principal investigator Giulia Zampini and
shared with nobody else. If there is a necessity to share any information
with other members of the research team, this will only occur after
expressed permission has been given in writing by participants to Giulia
Zampini.

Video, audio and other recorded material will be stored on two secure hard
drives, one held by the principal researcher, and the other stored by the
film producer, and will not be shared with anyone else.

Once we have a rough edit of the film, we will arrange a participatory
workshop to which all subjects will be invited to discuss and feedback on
the film, in what we call a generative participatory process.

We want to ensure your views and experiences are fairly represented. If you
were to choose to withdraw, you could do this during the review and
feedback process.

If you think you may be interested, please get in touch with me via email
at G.F.Zampini em greenwich.ac.ukor via telephone at 02083319279 or
07557982690.

Look forward to hearing from you!

All best,

Giulia
