Theology and Music: Making Connections
The Music School, Durham University, UK
Tuesday 20 June 2006

A one-day conference for postgraduate students on the relationship 
between music and theology.  Through a key-note presentation, papers, 
and a round-table discussion panel, this conference will explore issues 
of theology and music.  The influence of theology on music, both within 
the Church and beyond, is complex and far-reaching.  This conference 
will aim to highlight these influences and provide a forum for discussion.

Call for Papers

Proposals for 20-minute papers within the areas below are invited, 
although other proposals addressing other aspects of this topic are also
welcome:

Music and Worship: theology, doctrine and music Art music and the 
influenceof theology Genres and theological association 
Instruments/performance practice Theology, text and music

Keynote Speaker: Andrew Love OSB

Brother Andrew Cyprian Love is a Benedictine monk of Glenstal Abbey, 
County Limerick. He has a lifelong interest in musical improvisation, 
especially in a liturgical context. He holds a doctorate in musicology 
from the University of Hull, England, and has a number of publications 
in theology. A Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, he has made CD 
recordings on the organ of Glenstal Abbey, including both standard
repertoire and his own composition and improvisation.   He is author of
Musical Improvisation, Heidegger and the Liturgy – A Journey to the 
Heart of Hope (Mellen Press, 2003).
