LITERATURE AND MUSIC IN LATIN AMERICA

The objective of this session is to explore the intersections between literature and music in its numerous manifestations in Latin America. Although traditionally perceived as distinct disciplines, recent interartistic approaches have revealed that literature and music have shared common ground. From Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz's loas and villancicos, to the incorporation of popular musical forms such as the bolero and cha-cha-chá in the novels of Guillermo Cabrera Infante, to the collaborations between the Brazilian writer Mário de Andrade and the composer Mozart Camargo Guarnieri, the influences and counter-influences between Literature and Music in different time periods and regions of Latin America is an intriguing and innovative area for study.

Of possible consideration is how musical elements have been incorporated into literary works, whether in poetry, prose, or in theatre. Also important is how literature has inspired music as exemplified by Silvestre Revueltas's symphonic piece "Sensemayá" based on Nicolás Guillén's poem. Finally, other fascinating areas of examination are studies of the collaborations between writers and musicians or composers, and the adaptations of works from one artistic form to the other.

Both theoretical contributions to the study of the relationships between literature and music, as well as papers on specific works that show how literature and music have influenced each other in Latin America, are welcome.
