CALL FOR PAPERS

HARMONY AND DISCORD:
The Music of Intergroup Relations

Special Issue of the SAGE Journal, Group Processes and Intergroup
Relations, to be
Guest Edited by Howard Giles (Communication), John Hajda (Music), & David
Hamilton (Psychology) University of California, Santa Barbara

Music is a social phenomenon, human product, and a form of communication
between composer, performer, and audience. It directly affects most
individuals’ lives and plays a crucial role in constructing,
communicating, and ritualizing collectivities. Indeed, it is amongst the
most highly structured cultural expressions reflecting social groups’
essential values. Music, then, is a significant dimension of personal and
particularly social identity relating as it does to nationalities,
ethnicities, religions, politics, age groups and generations, genders and
sexual orientations. This multi-method Special Issue is devoted to
providing a coherent, culturally-diverse set of contributions exploring
the roles of music in intergroup dynamics. Generic themes would include:
peace, protest, music, and social change; intergroup cognitions, emotions,
and music; musical genres and social groups; music and nation-building;
subcultures, music, and the media; the interrelationships between music,
social identity, and other forms of artistic expression; new communication
technologies, music, and intergroup relations.

Deadline for submission May 1 2008 for an early 2009 publication date.
Submissions should be sent to HowieGiles em cox.net and due consideration
will be given to proposing an ICA panel on this topic.
