Call for Papers

International Conference on Music and Emotion

University of Durham, UK
31 August - 3 September 2009

The conference is conceived around four key-note panels representing the
disciplines of music theory, philosophy, psychology and sonic arts. In
addition, we invite papers on any aspect of emotion research, including:

  * new tools for analysing emotion in musical structure
  * theories of expression, arousal, contagion, and representation
  * categorical, dimensional, circumplex, and prototype models
  * aesthetic psychology and the role of empirical evidence
  * statistical and probabilistic models, including theories of
expectation and markedness
  * measuring physiological change, brain imaging, and analysis of
gesture and whole-body movement
  * mechanisms of induction, transmission, and evaluation
  * cross-modality and metaphor
  * labelling versus dynamic modelling
  * cross-cultural and trans-historical differences and universals
  * musical emotion in social context
  * classical versus evolutionary perspectives
  * rhetoric, figurality, and the passions
  * how emotion is mediated through musical form, material, timbre, and voice

Proposals (up to 200 words) for papers of around 20 minutes' duration
should be sent by email to Jo Buckley (jo.buckley at durham.ac.uk) by 1st
