Academic misconduct and resignation
Main article: Pál Schmitt scientific misconduct
controversy<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt_scientific_misconduct_controversy>

Pál Schmitt defended his doctoral (dr.univ) dissertation *summa cum
laude*at the
*Testnevelési Egyetem* (University of Physical Education) in 1995.
*Testnevelési
Egyetem* fused into Budapest's Semmelweis
University<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University>to
become one of its Faculties in
2000.<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-28>On 11
January 2012, the website of
HVG <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heti_Vil%C3%A1ggazdas%C3%A1g> accused
Schmitt of plagiarising the work of a Bulgarian sport expert for his
doctoral dissertation. Nikolay Georgiev's *Analyse du programme olympique
(des Jeux d’Olympiade)* was finished in 1987. Schmitt's dissertation,
written in 1992, appears to be almost entirely an exact translation of this
work.<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-HVG-plagium-29>The
accusation was denied by the Office of the President, who explained
that Schmitt and Georgiev were friends and worked together, from the same
sources,<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-HVG-plagium-denial-30>which
was in turn denied by Georgiev's
daughter.<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-31>HVG's
website revealed on 19 January, that he also plagiarized 17 pages
from a work written by German Klaus
Heinemann<http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Klaus_Heinemann&action=edit&redlink=1>in
1991,<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-32>thus
increasing the number of proven copied pages to 213 (95%) in the
225-page document. Further plagiarized sources were
identified<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-33>by
readers of a Hungarian website on 29 March. Among others, Schmitt has
included word-by-word translations from a work by Anita
DeFrantz<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_DeFrantz>without
referencing it at all. Anita DeFrantz happens to be the one who
recommended <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-34><http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-35>Schmitt's
daughter Petra for a University
of Southern California<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Southern_California>tennis
scholarship during the Salt
Lake City Olympic
bid<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Winter_Olympic_bid_scandal>.
(Petra Schmitt went on to make All-American of the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercollegiate_Tennis_Association>
.)

A five-member investigating committee at Semmelweis
University<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University>confirmed
the plagiarism,<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-36>and
concluded that despite the "procedural shortcomings," the dissertation
did formally satisfy the practices of the time. The committee's report,
issued on 27 March, blamed the *Testnevelési Egyetem* for not revealing the
copied sources, but fell short of putting any blame on Schmitt ("the author
may have thought that his dissertation satisfied the
requirements").<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-37>A
minority report was issued by the single non-faculty member of the
committee, which called for the revocation of the
title.<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-38>Schmitt
had met the president of the investigating committee and told him
that his (Schmitt's) good faith cannot be questioned, since he was not
alerted by his advisor and doctoral committee about any possible
shortcomings.

Semmelweis University
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University>revoked Schmitt's
academic title on 29 March
2012.<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-39><http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-sote_nemdoktor-40>

Following the Senate's decision, Schmitt appeared in two heavily
orchestrated interviews on state television and radio channels (M1 and
MR1)<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-41>.
He argued that the committee's report did not put the blame on him, and
disputed the Semmelweis
University<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University>Senate's
authority to revoke his title. (Later, the president of the
Hungarian Accreditation Committee announced that the decision of the
University Senate was legitimate according to relevant
regulations.<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-index_legal_02-42>)
He asserted that his conscience is clear and that he refuses the resign.
Schmitt also vowed in the interviews that he will complete a
Ph.D.<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ph.D.>dissertation. Over the
weekend, protesters and many commentators in the
media called for his
resignation<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-resigns.cnn-43>.
On April 1, 2012, the Rector of Semmelweis
University<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University>,
Tivadar Tulassay <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tivadar_Tulassay> announced
his resignation
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-44>explaining
that he wants to save the University from the harmful
consequences of the government's complete lack of support for him. On April
2, 2012 Schmitt gave the Hungarian Parliament his resignation
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-index_resigned_02-2><http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-resigns.cnn-43>where
he reiterated that his conscience was clear, vowed again that he will
complete a Ph.D. program, and threatened to launch a lawsuit against Semmelweis
University <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_University>.

The controversies escalated even to the IOC<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOC>,
and its spokesman, Mark Adams, informed news sources that "The IOC will ask
to receive the reports related to this case, study them and then consider
whether any action needs to be
taken."<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-46><http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Schmitt#cite_note-47>
