aliás, acabo de descobri-lo, kerman estava, conscientemente ou não,
repetindo o adorno de "o envelhecimento da música nova" (1955):

"The vain hope of art, that in the disenchanted world it might save itself
through pseudomorphosis into science, becomes art’s nemesis [see below].
Its gesture corresponds to what is psychologically termed identification
with the aggressor. The mannerisms of a machine shorn of any utility only
accentuate its uselessness in the midst of universal utility, a uselessness
from which art’s bad conscience derives, as well as much that art credits
to itself as a triumph over romanticism."

*nemesis*: "in extended use: a persistent tormentor; a long-standing rival,
an arch-enemy" (*oed*).
