*Descrição*

The BMI Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1985, is
dedicated to encouraging the creation, performance and study of music
through awards, scholarships, internships, grants, and commissions.

The BMI Student Composer Awards
<http://bmifoundation.org/programs/info/bmi_student_composer_awards> is an
annual competition open to young composers actively engaged in the study of
classical music. Our oldest awards program in any genre, the competition
has a prestigious history of discovering and encouraging many of today’s
most prominent and talented young composers. Awards are given for
compositions - instrumental, vocal, or electronic (or any combination
thereof) - submitted by students actively engaged in the study of music.
*Data Limite*

February 15, 2016 (11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time).
*Elegibilidade*

Applicants must be citizens of countries in the Western Hemisphere and must
be either enrolled in accredited public, private or parochial secondary
schools, in accredited colleges or conservatories of music, or engaged in
the private study of music with recognized and established teachers.
Applicants must be under the age of 28 as of the competition postmark
deadline.
*Premiação*

Prizes totaling US$20,000.00 and ranging from US$500.00 to US$5,000.00 will
be awarded at the discretion of the judges.
*Requisitos*

The composer must warrant that he or she is the sole composer and owner of
the composition; that it is an original work; that it has never been
published (other than self published), recorded commercially, or received
any prize or award, and that he or she has the full right and authority to
enter the composition into the competition.
*Critérios de Seleção*

Compositions will be judged on evidence of true creative talent. Academic
finesse, while not disregarded, will be considered secondary to vital
musicality and clarity of expression of the composer's work. There is no
limitation whatsoever on style. The judges will take into account:

   1. Formal content of the composition. This concerns the continuity and
   coherent expression of the composer's ideas;
   2. Melodic, harmonic and rhythmic idioms will be judged solely in terms
   of their consistency and suitability for the intent of the particular
   composition;
   3. Instrumentation, orchestration and vocal writing will be judged on
   the suitability of the choice and use of instruments or voices to the ideas
   presented in the composition;
   4. Age of the composer at the time of completion of the manuscript. When
   two compositions are of equal merit in the opinion of the judges, but there
   is an age disparity, preference will be given to the younger contestant.

*Restrições*

A composer may enter no more than one composition, which need not have been
composed during the year of entry.

All submitted works must have only one composer. Co-composed works are no
longer accepted to the BMI Student Composer Awards.
*Forma de Solicitação*

Applications must be submitted Online
<https://bmifoundation.org/applications/form/bmi_student_composer_awards_application>
.

The composition must carry the notation “BMI Student Composer Awards.” The
composer’s name as well as any other information indicating the identity,
school, or geographical location of the composer must be removed from the
score. A number will be assigned to the application upon submission, to
identify the score with the individual.

If the composer is the author of the text, a statement to that effect must
be included with the entry.
