"Uncommon Encores of the Great Pianists" is a tantalizing, intriguing
survey of infrequently-heard pieces that have served as encores for a
variety of pianists from the "golden age" to the present. The selections
draw upon the resources of the International Piano Archives at the
University of Maryland (IPAM) and include unpublished live performances of
actual encores played by such notables as Vladimir Horowitz, Wilhelm
Backhaus, Sviatoslav Richter, Shura Cherkassky, Arthur Loesser, Van
Cliburn, and others. In addition, IPAM Curator Donald Manildi plays several
encore pieces selected from his private score collection of obscure gems
from an earlier era. He also provides fascinating anecdotal commentary on
the encore practices of many eminent virtuosos.
