LYRICA SOCIETY CALLS FOR PAPERS 2006-2007
The Lyrica Society for Word-Music Relations is pleased to announce the
following deadlines for submission of abstracts to its forthcoming
conferences. Via e-mail attachments, applicants should also submit a
brief curriculum vitae with their proposals:
MUSIC AND THE ASIAN DIASPORA

Princeton, NJ, Westminster Choir College of Rider University: April 8-9,
2006 SUBMISSION DEADLINE: February 15, 2006:
Proposals for papers (30-minute presentation plus 10-minute question
period) on topics related to the music of the Asian Diaspora or by
Asian-American composers will be accepted. This symposium seeks to be
inclusive, and welcomes proposals from the fields of musicology,
ethnomusicology, music education, composition, and performance-practice.
Submissions to the Lyrica session of the symposium must deal with the
interaction of words with music.
Proposals should be in the form of an abstract of no more than 500 words
(including a list of AV equipment needs), and must be submitted via
email to lyricasociety em aol.com with "LYRICA/ASIA" in the subject line.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF SINGING (www.nats.org)
Lyrica will present its first scholarly papers session at the biennial
NATS Convention in Minneapolis, MN, June 30-July 4, 2006 SUBMISSION
DEADLINE: February 15, 2006
Abstracts should not exceed 500 words' length and include a list of AV
equipment needs. Lecture-recitals and papers should not to exceed 30
minutes' length, including discussion time. A Scandinavian focus is
strongly encouraged. Please direct abstracts to both the following

MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION (www.mla.org) ANNUAL CONVENTION
Philadelphia, PA, December 27-30, 2006 SUBMISSION DEADLINE: March 1, 2006
Two scholarly sessions are scheduled for the next MLA Convention, to be
held in Philadelphia, December 27-30, 2006.
Focus area I: "Re-sounding the Renaissance". Papers might address such
topics as music and sound in reconstructions of early modern performance
spaces (e.g. The New Globe); musical evocations of the Renaissance in
modern literature or opera; the sounds of early modern poetry and music
on the Internet; incorporating aural performance (live or recorded) into
the teaching of Renaisssance literature. Please submit abstracts,
resumes, and A/V requirements to Professor Leslie Dunn(dunn em vassar.edu),
Lyrica's Liaison Officer to the MLA with "LYRICA/MLA" in the subject line.
Focus area II: Opera in the Age of Enlightenment. Abstracts, with
resumes and A/V requirements should be sent jointly to

CHARLESTON-LYRICA CONVERSAZIONE
Charleston, South Carolina, May 13, 2006
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: March 1, 2006
In collaboration with The College of Charleston, Lyrica will hold a
day-long Symposium consisting of three colloquia (nine papers), on
Saturday, May 13, 2006. Individually, the colloquia will focus on
Mozart's _Don Giovanni_, Gounod's _Roméo et Juliette_, and on Opera in
America. Abstracts, not to exceed 500 words in length, should be sent
along with resumes to lyricacsociety em aol.com with "LYRICA/CHARLESTON" in
the subject line. Papers should not exceed thirty minutes' length,
including discussion time, and audio/visual requirements should be
clearly indicated.

Two scholarly sessions are scheduled for the next NOA Convention, to be
held in New York City, January 4-7. 2006. At present, these dates are
tentative.
Focus area I: African-American Composers: Please send abstracts,
resumes and A/V requirements to Professor Naomi André
(nandre em umich.edu), Lyrica's Liaison Officer to the NOA with
"LYRICA/NOA" in the subject line.
Focus area II: African-Diasporic Concepts. Please send abstracts,
resumes and A/V requirements to lyricacsociety em aol.com with "LYRICA/NOA"
in the subject line.
Papers should not exceed 30 minutes' duration, including discussion time.

IBERIAN AND LATIN-AMERICAN STUDIES
We are currently negotiating with a Latin-American Studies Convention at
which Lyrica would present two or three scholarly sessions (nine to
twelve papers in all) on the music of the Iberian Peninusula, of Latin
America and of the Spanish (including Sephardic) diaspora. Details to
follow.

All papers read at Lyrica's scholarly papers sessions presentation will
be automatically considered for publication in _Ars Lyrica_, the
peer-reviewed journal of the Lyrica Society for Word-Music Relations.
Successful candidates are expected to become bona fide members of the
Lyrica Society, the membership application for which may be downloaded
