> Music and ecologies of sound.
> Theoretical and practical projects for a listening of the world
>
> International Symposium University Paris 8, France 27, 28, 29 May 2013
>
> In recent music as well as in sound art, sound has emerged as a crossroad of theoretical and practical questions. Exploring timbre and noise, making space the central category, inventing new ways of experimenting such as sound immersion...; today’s music and sound art are renewing our relationship to sound in a significant manner – as much in the activities of production as in listening. What is a sound? Where does it begin and end? What are the relationships between the listener and sound?
>
> Many of these questions concern the permanent interaction of sound with what surrounds it: physical space, the environment, the audience... This interaction leads to the idea of an ecology of sound in the broad sense of the term “ecology” as a relationship between music or sound and oikos, the common home, the world. Félix Guattari designates three ecologies: environmental, social and mental. What then are the links between music or sound and the environment (or nature), society and subjectivity? More generally, what are the links between music-sound and the world? Studying these links will help us define the boundaries of a flourishing artistic field, ranging from compositional practices based on the notion of “soundscape” to site-specific realizations.
>
> The new disciplinary field of the ecology of sound is characterized by its interdisciplinarity, which intertwines references to arts and sciences, to exact sciences and human sciences. In this way questions concerning the complexity of our world arise, like that of “emergence”. Part of the symposium will be devoted to the concept of an “audible ecosystem” (as defined by Agostino Di Scipio), a notion which develops the paradigm of complexity by way of the triangular interaction between a musician, a computer system and the environment.
>
> This symposium wishes to give priority to the analysis of practices and theories, which aim not only to develop our knowledge of the interactions between music-sound, the environment, society and subjectivity, but also to think about the possibility of changing the world for the better.
>
> The following subjects could be developed:
>
> - ecology and ecosophy of sound, sound and acoustic ecology: theoretical aspects
>
> - music and nature
> - soundscape compositions
> - field recording, sound art, phonography...
> - site-specific practices: sound installations, soundwalks, environmental music, music and architecture...
> - audible ecosystems, models of complexity and auto- organization: emergence, enaction...
>
> Proposals on similar themes are welcome.
