Music at the Margins: An Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference hosted by the
Harvard University Graduate Music Forum

The Harvard University Graduate Music Forum invites proposals for its
upcoming
interdisciplinary conference, “Music at the Margins.” The conference will
take
place on February 23rd, 2013, at the Harvard Music Department in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. The GMF is pleased to welcome Professor Kevin Korsyn of the
University of Michigan as this year’s keynote speaker. The conference will
also
include a workshop led by Harvard professor Sindhumathi Revuluri.

Twenty-minute papers are welcomed on a broad range of topics, including,
but not
limited to:

• Non-canonical or otherwise marginalized repertoires
• Non-traditional and interdisciplinary approaches to music
• Boundaries and affinities between sound, noise, and music
• Issues of genre and style
• Manuscript studies and marginalia

We especially encourage proposals on repertoires and musical practices
outside
of the Western canon, and prior to the 20th century.

Proposals may be submitted to HarvardGMF2013 at gmail.com until midnight on
January 15, 2013. Proposals should consist of an email with the applicant’s
name, email address, and institutional affiliation, with a PDF or Word
attachment containing the paper’s title and an abstract of up to 500 words.
Proposals may also include up to two pages of diagrams, the captions of
which
will not be counted against the 500-word limit. In order to facilitate
anonymous
review, please do not include names or contact information in the
attachment.
Accepted abstracts will be announced on or before February 1.
